Verse 2, he alludes to his religious beliefs, and ends with "whats your sign / im just a red blooded heterosexual" or - I want to get laid.

I know Without you was about self improvement
Josephina about wanting to know what his mom was like as a child
Year to the day - Gary's GF (Suzy?) leaving him for Nuno?

I always interpreted Once, and One I Want as songs about Jesus - per Gary's Catholic upbringing.

Ballot or the Bullet - Political
How Many Say I - Empathy, Charity
Yep I was referring to the bridge and the chorus. I think he's just saying forgot politics and forget religion--let's get laid and not worry about it.

Never thought that about OIW, a song I absolutely love, and you're probably right about that now that I think about verses' play on words. WY could be the same thing, with "You" being Jesus. "Once" still could go either way with "love" or deity (as he mentions). And I still don't know what the fuck the narrative in BOTB is. Something about Malcolm X they said back then?

Ha, that's three potential songs about God--all VH3 haters are going to hell!

Never knew that about Gary and Nuno. The origin of "Suzi?" Wow.

Love that fucking song. The riff, the verses, the background vocals, the solo with the bad ass riff at the end of it...a Top 5 Extreme song for me.

Sucks to hear he's that bad.

I've heard mostly bad things about him, unfortunately. Met him once about 10 years ago and he was fine with me.

Once is definitely about Jesus (for me at least) if you read it line by line:

Once embraced, can't ever be let go
Once revealed, can't ever be not shown
Once believed, can't ever lose faith
Once shared, can't ever be separate
Once sown, once can't ever be not reaped
Like the dawn of a brand new day
    With the power of deity
Well, I can feel it inside of me
Feel it. Can you feel it?
Once born, can't ever be not conceived (the virgin birth)
Once present, can't ever be past
Once first, once can't ever be not ever last (I am the Alpha and Omega)
Returning home of the prodigal (Jesus returning to Jerusalem as prophesized in the Old Testament)
    Holding the intangible (Holy Spirit)
    TO BELIEVE IN A MIRACLE
Believe it. Can you believe it?
    ...
Once seen, can't ever lose sight
Once dawn, can't ever be not light
    Once, once felt, once felt
    Can't ever be untouched
The assurance only hope can bring
With the conviction of the unseen (God)
See it's greater than everything (God's love for us...)
See it, oh can you see it?

I def think he's saying the love of Christ is like no other love. My opinion based on what I know of Gary... I'm not saying I'm right or that I read that anywhere. It's just my personal interpretation. Considering his next band was called Tribe of Judah, one of the 12 tribes of Israel, I don't think it's a stretch to say Gary snuck some religion into his lyrics....

I know I read an interview somewhere with Ed, where he was in therapy - and then the first few lines of Without You came to him in the bathroom or something. There's a 20 min 2 part interview on youtube if you want to see it about III.

III in itself has a religious connotation (The Trinity). The album always meant a lot to me, regardless of what most think of it.

I was also pretty sure Extreme "Hole Hearted" was about Jesus when I first heard it in HS as well...

Agreed. He might be doing a "sure, you can take it as a love song if you want, but..." approach like I'm sure Sammy did with LWI with the alien encounter/falling in love parallel, but it's clearly and predominantly about The Lord. Only took me 21 years to get that! Always assumed it was a love song with a religious twist because Gary often does sing about religion. Like "Hole Hearted" but vice-versa as that's stated to be about God but most think it's a pop love song. Exit Elvis to boot.

And yeah I remember the "Without You"/shitter interview. Wasn't that the Tommy Nast premiere party broadcast? I think he said he did more writing on the pot in addition as I recall.

    I appreciate it.

And it's simply a great fuckin' song. One of the best on the album. I believe WVH is a big fan, too. They should've went heavier on the chorus like TOJ did when they performed it live (or even the refrain chorus at the end). Would've been even better.

YouTube and Soundcloud are being gamed now. Like that Soul Asylum song said, "Nothing draws a crowd like a crowd." Record companies take some slop heap of a singer and give them 500,000 fake views and 80,000 fake Facebook likes from an Indian bot farm, then a push in People magazine and Pitchfork or whatever kids listen to, and people think, "Oh, I guess this is what's happening now? I'm late to the party?," and the instinct to join the herd kicks in and suddenly people are worshiping a 17 year old like a golden calf.

Have you heard of Kane Brown? He's this kid who's about 22 and filling arenas. Just three years ago he had no band, no songs, and the next thing you know he's packing arenas. This site did a GREAT job of exposing him and the modern music industry fake numbers game.

The counter to that is guys like this guy https://ultimateclassicrock.com/rock-band-fake-fanbase/. There are genuinely guy sout there like Plini & DMM whi are building it up organically online.

Plini is smashing it. He's playing festivals, as an instrumental guitarist, that's unheard of. Like Vai said when he heard, and then signed, Plini, "the future of guitar music is safe" or something like that.
