Default Billie Eilish says she doesn't know who Van Halen is

Now Roth on the other hand, I'm sure knew the majority of the music. In the end who cares, music has changed a lot from 1978 to 2019, much like its changed a lot from 1932-1972.

What were the most popular songs in 1932?
Night and Day, April in Paris, Iím Getting Sentimental Over You, In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town, Shuffle Off to Buffalo, I Told Every Little Star, How Deep Is The Ocean, Granada, Youíre an Old Smoothie, Forty-Second Street, Youíre Getting to Be a Habit, With Me

What were the most popular albums in 1932?

New Tiger Rag by Louis Armstrong
Reefer Man and The Man from Harlem by Cab Calloway
If You Were the Only Girl by Rudy Vellee
It Donít Mean a Thing If It Ainít Got That Swing by Duke Ellington
Well Ed was playing big band and jazz stuff with his father and classical music on piano in competition. So there is a good chance he knew that stuff well actually.

My point is rock Ďní roll existed 30 years ago from now, it did not exist 30 years before 1972. And it barely existed 30 years for us in the 80s. I can guarantee you, Eddie Van Halenís knowledge of music and artists in 1972 destroys anything that Billie Eilish knows. Ed was an accomplished champion competition musician who could play by ear. Thatís a seriously silly comparison.

The other comparison you guys are making isnít the same thing. Ed knew a ton of music from the beginning of rock Ďní roll. She clearly doesnít have a strong grasp of the history of the genre. And I donít think she needs to, but comparing her generation to ours is just silly.

I just listened to the question again.

Kimmel asked if she knows who Madonna is. Yes, she knows Madonna. Then he asks "Can you name a Van Halen?"

What an awkward question. If he asked "can you name a member of the band Van Halen" she'd probably say "no" and it would be fine.

I think she was caught off guard. Not that it matters but that's what I think after rewatching it.

I wonder which brand new artist in 1984 would say they have no clue who was the big hit makers of 1959. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billbo...ingles_of_1959

    Here we're talking 30 years!
So a more apt comparison would be if in the 80s, we were familiar with stuff from the 50s. Like
Paul Anka... well we weren't. Nobody cared about the 50s in the 80s. I would say actually that the 80s are a bit more remembered today than the 50s were in the 80s.

In other words, time flies, it's already 30 years later, and we're old. Fuck.
Yeah, that's why I made the comparison earlier, about how most of my friends in high school had no idea who all the jazz and big band greats were. But, I'd say it's even worse nowadays. Here today, gone later today.

That's what is upsetting to me. On paper, everyone should know the path they created, both musically and influentially. They were rock pioneers. Then they re-invented themselves as Billboard's pop darlings.

It's basically the 20 year-long discussion we've all had about what they've done to their legacy, blowing up on twitter.
    Excellent post.

As much as it was hard to listen through an entire track, Billie Whatshername is certainly gifted. But...her ignorance of Van Halen is sad, if not troubling, for the very reasons that you noted.

My forefathers came from Italy, and as a result, as a child, I was given to many sessions of: "You sit here and watch Pavarotti with the rest of us, and Lord help you if you make a sound."

I still don't care for Pavarotti, yet his giftedness is undeniable.

So too, with Van Halen: their contribution to music is indelible. How this is not carried from one generation to the next, is, at the very minimum, a shame.
"If only Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang had as much enthusiasm about Van Halen as Dave, Sammy and Mike do Ö " - I Coulda Hada VH

"I don't think he owes us, and I think few if any do. What we would like is for him to release music, since he is our favorite musician. It's a wish and a hope, not a critique." - Dave's Dreidel

Yeah, sometimes Eddie has been really over the top with that. He doesn't listen to other people's music, he can't name any other guitarists that he's impressed by, etc. I don't know where it comes from but he seems to have a hard time even acknowledging that he's even aware that other bands exist, to a sometimes comical level.

I'm reading Martin Popoff's VH book and in the long chapter about the US Festival:

The whole idea of Heavy Metal Day seemed to be lost on Eddie Van Halen. "I didn't even realize what bands played with us; it didn't even hit me until I was over at Donn's house watching it on Showtime. ... and it wasn't until sitting at Donn's house watching the tube and seeing who actually played with us that it dawned on me."

Seriously? He didn't even know what other bands played that day until he saw it on TV? Every band I've ever seen interviewed about it talked about how there was the big community area in the back and with all the bands interacting. I don't know, it seems hard to believe to me.

Right? The last few times VH has made waves on the internet is because Dave crashed a bachelor party where no one recognized him, and then a Tool fan asks Eddie to take a picture of him in front of the stage without recognizing who he was.
