I, too, saw her on SNL. Skip skip. Couldn't skip fast enough. But there is no denying her popularity. You do your thing, girl!

    Here we're talking 30 years!
So a more apt comparison would be if in the 80s, we were familiar with stuff from the 50s. Like
Paul Anka... well we weren't. Nobody cared about the 50s in the 80s. I would say actually that the 80s are a bit more remembered today than the 50s were in the 80s.

In other words, time flies, it's already 30 years later, and we're old. Fuck.
Yeah, but in the 80s you didn't have youtube at your disposal. You would have to go to a record store and buy a copy of an album to familiarize yourself with an artist's work unless you heard it on the radio. Now you can do it at home and not even have to pay for it. So the time thing doesn't really hold water IMO.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Yes but what I'm leading to is that the 50s were not COOL when we were growing up. Nobody gave a damn about the 50s in 1982! Even if we had access to all the music from that decade, we would've said "fuck this, that's old people music, I ain't listening to it!"

Well now our music is old people's music. And we're the old people.

They gave a little bit of a damn, I know in the 80s and the mid 90s I could find proper oldies radio stations that would play hits from the 50s-60s. I think that type of music got booted from the radio dial about 10-15 years ago. The last era that truly grew up on radio is slowly fading out.

    I guess.

I like big band jazz/swing, classical, old school blues, early rockabilly, etc.

My friends and I were driving around and listening to Creedence's "Chronicle" anthology when I was in high school. I went and bought a copy for myself and my dad came in and asked what I was doing listening to "his" music. So you start with one band of the era and then you start listening to their contemporaries to see if there's more stuff that you like and I did. Its how I "discovered" the Doors and Hendrix, there wasn't really a "classic" rock station back then because rock was alive and well and constantly putting out new material. What you had then was the "oldies" station and they played 50s and 60s stuff.

I suppose it depends on whether you are someone who listens to stuff because it is "trendy" and follow the masses or not. I went through about a 6 month to year period of that in 8th to early 9th grade where I thought rap was cool. Then it dawned on me that it was pretty much garbage and I've done my own thing ever since.

Yes, Hendrix, The Doors, etc. When we were growing up. That's still only 15 years old music. The late 60s were only 15 years removed in the early 80s.

    2019 - 15 = 2004.

So that's like kids today into music from 2004.

The early 80s are now 35 years removed. That's like not even the 50s, that's like the late 40s for our generation!!

Default Billie Eilish says she doesn't know who Van Halen is

Most of us were listening to rock Ďní roll and rock Ďní roll barely existed 30 years before most of a started listening to music seriously. I donít think we should have been expected to know big band music from the 40s. I would say most of us had a fairly decent grasp of early rock Ďní roll music from the 50s and early 60s back in the 80s. Thirty years ago from now rock Ďní roll was a huge and vibrant genre, not in its infancy. Itís not the same comparison.

Ed at age 17 would have been around 1972, here are the great classics of 1932. I'm positive he knew very little of that music, but was pretty well versed on what was the new trend of '72. Now Roth on the other hand, I'm sure knew the majority of the music. In the end who cares, music has changed a lot from 1978 to 2019, much like its changed a lot from 1932-1972.

What were the most popular songs in 1932?
Night and Day, April in Paris, I’m Getting Sentimental Over You, In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town, Shuffle Off to Buffalo, I Told Every Little Star, How Deep Is The Ocean, Granada, You’re an Old Smoothie, Forty-Second Street, You’re Getting to Be a Habit, With Me

What were the most popular albums in 1932?

New Tiger Rag by Louis Armstrong
Reefer Man and The Man from Harlem by Cab Calloway
If You Were the Only Girl by Rudy Vellee
It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing by Duke Ellington
