Well a lot of us didnít know who she was so who cares. We are no more in tune with the current music scene than she is with ours.

Default Billie Eilish says she doesn't know who Van Halen is

Van Halen should be real proud. Only way to get publicity is because someone doesnít know who they are. Itís pretty sad.

The difference is that she's only 17 (involuntary Kip Winger quote), and she's still learning. But she learns really fast and really has musical talent. She writes all her own stuff - it's not like all the other pop singers out there who depend on outside producers and writers. She and her brother write everything.

But yes, being 17, she listens to a lot of hip hop. I would say that every person born post-2000 listens to hip hop. It's unavoidable, hip hop is the "cool" music of today. It's not really even hip hop anymore, it's pop music with a bit of rap in it. I see it with my kids. It's not a niche genre anymore, it is the main, dominant genre.

But I will say that one of the problems bands like VH will have with this new generation is the lack of guitar in today's pop and hip hop. It's harder to link old guitar-based music with today's stuff if guitar isn't present in today's music.

    Yeah, very true.

But it is kind of a shame too.

When I was younger I was still aware of who Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Creedence Clearwater, Fleetwood Mac, Linda Rondstadt, Deep Purple, The Who, The Doors, Queen, etc were even though by the late 80s they were either done or not really on the scene any more.

I also knew who the Four Tops, The Temptations, Bill Haley and the Comets, Buddy Holly, the Vandellas, and others of that genre were.

For someone who allegedly likes Classic Rock to have no idea of Van Halen is unfathomable to me.

It doesn't really matter what they've done over the last 20 years, the story of rock and roll cannot be properly told without Van Halen, so if you're ignorant about who they are then that says more about that person than it does about Van Halen.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Funny, my 8 year old son wants nothing to do with that crap.

We were at the zoo a couple of weeks ago and he and his brother were walking around singing "TNT." I got plenty of compliments about "raising them right."

But the thing is other than him hearing me play my guitar or hearing what I listen to in the car he finds this stuff on his own. He's got a tablet and I let him watch youtube without telling him what to listen to and he always comes away from it with some classic rock or guitar driven song.

I've heard "Another One Bites the Dust" and "Eye of the Tiger" a bunch lately.

The reason most kids listen to this stuff isn't because its any good, its because that's all they're exposed to.

I like a lot of female artists but she is not among the ones I care about. I don't usually understand the appeal of the "popular" acts these days, though, and I have to question the ridiculous "alternative pop" label she falls under.

My wife just called to tell me that Van Halen is trending on Yahoo because of Billie Eilish.

"Honey, Van Halen is trending on Twitter"

"Oh boy, who died...(after checking it out) no big deal, its just ANOTHER story about how no one knows who Van Halen is"

This is almost turning into a meme.

edit: She bought her album on Record Store Day last Friday, its ok, not my cup of tea but different.

I think Drew Magary had a solid tweet about the subject. If you think Billie Eilish is a bit oblivious to music, you should see how oblivious Eddie Van Halen is to music. I think we've all read the same interview a million times "Last album I bought was So"

Eddie Van Halen has told more lies over the years than Bill, Hillary and Pinocchio combined.

Wait till he turns 10. My boy's heard everything and he likes a lot of rock stuff. But I can't compete with all his school friends listening to that stuff. His friends think hip hop is cool, i don't - guess who wins.

I think also we get the comparisons wrong. We think, "wait a second, in the 80s, we still knew who Led Zeppelin was!"

But in the 80s, we were only 10 years removed from Zep!
    Here we're talking 30 years!
So a more apt comparison would be if in the 80s, we were familiar with stuff from the 50s. Like
Paul Anka... well we weren't. Nobody cared about the 50s in the 80s. I would say actually that the 80s are a bit more remembered today than the 50s were in the 80s.

In other words, time flies, it's already 30 years later, and we're old. Fuck.
