Yes, Taylor's daddy was loaded. As I stated in another thread, she also got much of start in music from modeling:

"In 2003, Swift and her parents started working with New York-based music manager Dan Dymtrow. With his help, Swift modeled for Abercrombie & Fitch as part of their "Rising Stars" campaign, had an original song included on a Maybelline compilation CD, and attended meetings with major record labels."

So I ask you… If Taylor Swift was a chubby little, greasy faced girl and NOT a 5'10", skinny, blonde Michelle Pfeiffer mini-me when she "attended meetings with major record labels", would she have been given the same "development deal"? Even if the songs were the same, and she sang the same?

So is that TALENT? Or is it MARKETABILITY? Not Saying Ms. Swift is not a talented girl, but to think her looks/money didn't have at least 75% to do with where she is would be naïve.

My band did a show with this girl earlier this year... I can tell you from seeing her from 5ft away, she can absolutely sing/play as well as her hero Taylor. And she's even taller...I'm 5'10" and change and she had a solid 2 inches on me in flats! But nobody will ever hear her outside NJ cuz she doesn't have the $$$ behind her. I was almost going to invest in her career, but I knew it would appear creepy since I'm old enough to be her dad...And I've been playing around here long enough to know it's all bullshit!!!

The whole pop music scene is bullshit. Always has been, always will be.

Marginal talent with looks selling crappy records to kids because they're young and impressionable and don't know the difference.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

And if DLR was a 400lb dude, VH is never signed.

As with all things it's the total package. Taylor writes her own material. Does she have cowriters? Yup. She also doesn't play every instrument and do her own stage design.

YOU get what I'm saying! Here's a girl that was on the "locals only" show on one of the country stations here. She's a student at UGA, but is trying to push a singing career, as well, and apparently is pretty well-funded to be making a video like this. The looks are sure there! Will it turn into anything?

My point exactly. You can throw a rock and hit 100 potential Taylor Swifts. What makes a Taylor ultimately stand out? Maybe that her dad has the cash to grease her career?

They don't even need to sell the crappy records anymore, as long as they get the clicks. And those can always be supplemented with fakes...

True - and if the songs were as shitty as the Quiet Riot Japanese demo's, they probably don't get signed either. I think that's the major difference between the 70's and then what happened with the advent of the internet/technology. Back then, you needed legit music, AND the ability to perform it live. Now we can substitute pure musical talent with backing tracks and random bullshit. AND bypass the years of playing clubs all over developing your craft, building a following. Getting 2k kids to show up to a keg party in Pasadena. It can be done completely overnite now with the proper industry backing.

Money gets you an initial push. Gets you working with top people. But if you're not talented it'll flop. And 15 years in, her talent is pretty clear.

No different than rich parents can get their kids into the best schools but at some point their own ability will be what makes them a success or not.

Taylor's brother is an actor. His parents money hasnt made him a star.

That's kind of an extreme example but there's a kernel of truth there.

But there were plenty of acts in the 70s that got signed that weren't the greatest looking dudes on the planet. Meatloaf comes to mind.

Being overweight didn't stop Mama Cass from being a part of the Mamas and the Papas.

And let's get real. If Taylor Swift was some 300lb chick bet everything else was exactly the same no one would have ever heard of her.

Music videos changed the game. What you looked like mattered. Its noy all that matterd but it mattered. Ugly Taylor Swift isn't a star. But she's not nearly the best looking woman in the industry but she's the most successful. Songs still matter.

Part of it sure. Michael Jackson- great with imaging, worked with top people. But talented. Same for Prince, Madonna, Taylor, etc. Hell if the Beatles were 4 ugly dudes they likely never make it out of the pubs. Image has value.
