As someone mentioned earlier, heís just riffing with the lyrics. I know thereís a few variations on the lyrics on those demos. Summer Nights and BOBW have a few additional things...Iím glad that stuff didnít make the final cut.

None of those demos have guitar solos on them either if I remember right. I can see Ed soloing over the whole ride out, not blistering kind of like DDL.

Itís a cool little demo, we donít have anything like it from the Sam era, itís just fun to hear. Woulda loved to hear the finished product to see how much it evolved.

I remember reading that they had considered In the Midnight Hour for 1984, and may have even recorded a demo version. I'm glad it didn't make the grade, as I think 1984 is perfect as it is. Wouldn't mind hearing an outtake, though.

I was thinking the same thing. I remember reading in Circus magazine (!) back in '83 that it was being considered for their next album (1984), but never heard much else about it. I don't think that's ever leaked, or at least I've heard it if it has.

Van Halen would have killed “In The Midnight Hour”. I think it would have been another classic cover by them.

Dave would have absolutely slayed on this.

†"He has a swaggering retro machismo that will give hives to the Steinem cabal" -Camille Paglia on Donald Trump

"But, fucking with Brook is like fucking with hot shit on and ax handle. You just don't get a grip"-track5

"Make way for the bad guy"- Tony Montana

'This hamburger don't need no helper"- David Lee Roth

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango

"But being number one doesnít really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen

Well, I made another crack at it. I tried to remove some of the compression & improve the dynamic range. Not sure if it sounds any better, but I thought I'd try. If definitely sounds better than yesterday's version, at least to my ears....& finally is a track I don't have to skip on my VH bootleg mix bc of crappy sound quality. Please be kind, I've heard so many versions of this track today that I think I've lost the plot. Now I know how engineers feel lol

EDIT: After a few listens, I don't know if its any better. Well, I tried.

Agreed. This song would have fit nicely into his range, & maybe Ed could have done some creative bluesy guitar fills where the horns are on the original.

As I said in another thread, Iím not a critic of Samís lyrics. Over the span of about 50 years heís been one of most prolific song writers in rock history. UFB however is terrible. Probably the most cringeworthy song heís pinned. Hearing the song stripped of the lyrics really shows how every part of the song creation process has to gel to be good. Great lyrics canít save a horrible song and with this, terrible lyrics destroyed what could have been a really good VH song. Really demonstrates just how hard it is to create something musically that is listenable. Makes both eras of their catalog that much more impressive for me. Especially how many truly amazing songs came from the first era. Lightening in a bottle...

This was a really cool thing you did. Gave a lot of us perspective on the song creation process we otherwise would never really understand. I’m really fascinated by this as a non-musician. Thanks for taking the time and effort!

Lighting struck twice, because the second era also had some truly amazing songs.

Absolutely! As an absolutely amateur guitar player myself, it's very fascinating. My goal today was to try to reduce the compression of the track, to make it more 'open' sounding without compromising the improvement in sonics. I don't think I accomplished my goal, but you learn every time you play with this stuff. I completely underhand the concept of ear fatigue, after listening to various tweaks to this track over the past two days.
