Like 1986/87. Yes Paul did the drill thing before Eddie. I don't think Eddie ever claimed to have come up with that. I'm sure somewhere along the line mid 80s, someone said "Hey Ed, you gotta check out this Paul Gilbert guy!"

Paul is a complete master of the electric guitar. Whether you like his playing or not, his technical proficiency can not be denied.

I've loved him since the Racer X days. Even with Mr. Big. His solo stuff smokes as well, and I recently bought his Get Out of My Yard cd.

Yeah I don’t see what the big deal is, Eddie never claimed to invent the drill idea, he just decided to use it.

Lol yeah Paul Gilbert fucking around with the drill in that video is probably the least impressive part of it...! The 6 string sweeps and insane alternate picking accuracy are a lot more impressive than 5 seconds of Eruption. I only posted the Paul vid because it seems sorta strange people are all impressed by this type of playing on Instagram in 2019 when Paul and others were doing it live 30+ years ago ...

    No big deal.
Work was slow, so I'm sitting at home, bored out of my mind.

I recall an Ed article saying that they were hanging drywall or something at the 5150 studio, and he picked up a drill laying there, and held it close to his pick up, and discovered that amazing (yeah, right, more like tooth drilling) sound, LOL!
Can't remember when I read it though.

And folks, there's no doubt that all of these '80s shredders are as good as they are,
when they did nothing but practice their damn guitar, for 18 to 20 hours a day!
    The MFs better be good!
When we expire, somebody will have to get rid of all our stuff
