I don't think the "you had to be there" argument is that you can be distracted by other things, and don't notice how bad it really is.

It's that the audio quality of a 40 year old video recording, played back at 96 kbps, on a laptop's speakers is going to sound less full, less spacious, and more compressed and flatter than what you hear live. And when that sound is something as dynamic as Dave's screams -- it's a major difference.

And then the tits make up for the missed notes when he was drunk.

I'll give a non VH example.

Went and saw Iron Maiden this summer. Recency bias of course, but one of the better rock shows I've been to in my life. Thought Bruce Dickinson did great. I noticed him off key a few times during the show, but it wasn't distracting.

Watched a couple YouTube videos from my show and he doesn't sound good, and I think part of it is that a rock show is being there, eyes, ears, you can FEEL the music, you can feel the energy, it is at MAXIMUM volume, distorted...it is simply different.

So while I agree that you can tell whether they were hitting the notes or not, what you can't tell is what it was like there live.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Louisville 1982 and 1984. He was all over the place. By 1984 he was a caricature of a caricature of himself. YouTube clips of Dave from 1978-1981 aren't too shabby.

I think the closest Dave got to his early form was 2007, actually. I thought he was great on that tour.

If we could have had Mike on the 2007 tour and the 2012 Ed on that tour--wow!

DLR and Al held the 07/08 tour together.

Two hall of famer's holding it together with an amateur bass player and a guitar player with the shakes. As 1986 said, 07/08 DLR and Al, 2012 Ed, and throw Mike into the mix...wow.

Not taking anything away from Wolf, at 16 he did better than I could have at 49, but still, he was 16 playing his first live gigs.

Dave's 04-10 vocals were his best since FW tour. He did limited shows on 04-06 but they were some of his best solo shows. His band was awesome as well.

Ed struggled some nights, but there were a lot of nights where he was really quite good actually.

He was probably even better in 2015 than he was in 2012.

Was that the five piece band? Luzier, Young, another guitarist (Yoshiko?), and was it James Lomenzo (White Lion) on bass?

    BOOM!!!

2007 / 2008 Dave was exactly where he needed to be and how he needed to sound! Still had most of the scream, he used it strategically, and had Rock Star swagger and really SANG the songs! Kept in a comfortable range and overall I thought NAILED it vocally!!! Definitely had the reigns of the ship (… could have done without the Sailor hat... but anyway)

A very triumphant return and, in my opinion, brought himself back to Diamond Dave status. Was really excited about the future after that Tour...

The cat in a blender yelping, page boy jazz hands, and total loss of awareness of melody, key, etc. that followed was both shocking and disappointing...

Holy shit, Dickinson is losing his voice??!!!!

I haven't followed Maiden in years, but i was a huge fan up through "Somewhere in time."

I just can't imagine him being off key.
He was in that holy trinity of Halford, Tate & Dio.
