Just heard some troubling news. I have a friend that works for an MLB team’s front office, they were told that there likely will not be any baseball this year and to expect wholesale lay-offs in the coming weeks.

That’s horseshit! NASCAR’s been able to run a few races, and I realize that’s a little different because all of the teams compete in the same race, but I’m pretty sure MLB could figure something out. Hell, stake out five domed stadiums. Six teams move in and play 3 home and 3 away games against each other - 30 games. Every day - a game at 11A, 3P and 7P. And they rotate and go join different groups. Probably couldn’t do a strict thirty games at each location due to scheduling logistics, but again, they could work it out if they put their minds to it.

I feel bad for the kids that would be playing little league right now more than these overpaid primadonnas.

And I saw a headline where an NFL player said you can’t have an NFL game without fans in the stands.

Just no grasp on reality so many of these guys.

I read some teams are talking about staff reductions.

I thought playing some form of a season was still on the table.

They should just go play with themselves. Like field of dreams.

I just passed on what he said, he’s an executive in a front office for a team. He is freaked. his job is in jeopardy.

Yeah they’ll never get on the field this season. Just don’t see it.

wonder what happens then - does everything get pushed back a year? all those guys that were going to be free agents after the season, do they have to wait another year (because you know that's all they care about any more)?

I imagine that'll be the case if no games are played.

I’ll be pretty pissed if that’s not the case. The Dodgers traded away a bunch of players to get Mookie Betts and the fucking guy doesn’t play one game? That’s bullshit. Then the Dodgers should get their players back.

If there is no season, then things should just carry over to 2021.

I think that all got ironed out in March. The union and the league agreed that the clock kept ticking no matter what happened with this season. I did read that although Mookie will be a FA next year, he will not get what he would have(300mil/400 mil). No team is going to give that much money coming off this world crisis.

Edit: Here is some info relative to FA.

    https://www.si.com/mlb/2020/03/27/pl...al-coronavirus

And specifically about players like Mookie.

players obtained assurances that an abbreviated or cancelled season would not damage the accrual of service time. MLB could have argued that service time is predicated on actual play. MLBPA, in turn, could have insisted that service time, as defined in the CBA, doesn’t necessitate “play” but rather roster status—namely, whether a player is on an active roster or injured list.

The two sides hatched an agreement that favors the players. Specifically, if an abbreviated season is played, players would get the service time equivalent for a full season. For instance, if the season was reduced by 60%, a player’s service time could be adjusted upward to reflect the reduction in season-length. Alternatively, if the season is cancelled, MLB has pledged to recognize an equal amount of service in 2020 as the player had amassed in 2019 (so long as player is on the active roster or injured list). As a result of these changes, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts and other players who are currently set to become free agents next winter will still get that opportunity.

Oh Billy better be careful because your treading on old fart territory. These young fans think every guy who hits 250 should make 10 million a year.
