    Fair question. Simple. They donít want to. They donít crave the limelight. Theyíre hired to serve the song, not themselves. They donít view it as obscurity and in fact they arenít obscure at all. They also arenít limited at all. They play on many different styles of music and embody the truest form of the label Ďmusicianí.

    We might not know of them here on a VH message board but they are definitely known in Nashville and people do call on them. Often.

    Joe Bonamassaís bass player Michael Rhodes is the most recorded bass player in Nashville history and therefore possibly music history.

    Ever heard of him? Me neither. Granted that was before he joined his band a few years back.

    Thereís a great documentary with clips on YT called The Session Men, I believe. Great insight into the life and what these guys do.

    I’ll have to check that out. I wonder how many of these guys would turn down an offer to join a band already successful, stable with no drama between the members? I get not wanting to start something new with unknowns, especially in today’s climate. If the music scene was similar to what it was in the 60’s-80’s (pre-Napster), I bet a lot of those players would jump at the chance to be part of an up and coming band with other talented musicians. (Just speculation obviously!)

    I think one thing about players is if they simply want to give up a potentially steady income (by sessions work) and the ability to stay in one location vs touring. Some guys may be married with kids and do not want to spend 8 months of the year on the road. They would rather show up at a studio, play a part and go back home to see the wife and kids.

    Yep. And they may want to avoid the bullshit aspects of fame. Better for some people to be a hired gun. You get to play music the way you always wanted but you can also go to the bar or to the airport without fanboys screaming your name all the time, or filming you for YouTube or whatever the hell else. If you really love music, this is probably a better way to do it for some.

    There's that kid I posted in the Rush thread who plays every part and sings Permanent Waves from start to finish. He's a Nashville session guy and also tours with Queen in some capacity.

    When John Entwistle died, they replaced him some bass player like that...Palladino or whatever his name is. Same with the bassist who replaced Bill Wyman in the Stones. The drummer who replaced Bill Berry in REM. The bass and drums in Derek Trucks' band are local Atlanta guys, and that drummer (Jeff Sipe) has a LOT more ability than what you're going to hear in that context.

    More often in the case of solo guys like Sting and Billy Joel, you're going to see these guys who step forward and recreate the record, then back into the shadows, who are unknown monster players.

    Just saw Bob Seger a couple of weeks ago, and when he was introducing his band, a couple of the guys were "and this guy won the blah blah blah award for best guitarist in Nashville", and "this guy has played on just about every blah blah record you've ever heard" - all session guys. And all amazing.

    I find a lot of the session guys kinda sterile.

    They can play anything, yet they aren't really unique in any way.

    I dont think that is the case, but I think its a by=product of what they do. Because they are "session guys" they never put their name to anything, but if they did, then you would equate them to a sound. Two of the biggest session guys of all time, I could pick out of any song, Lukather & Dan Huff but only because I have avidly followed them and they both have a "sound".

    These days the whole "session" world has been stood on its head. "Nashville" still exists for the US "establishment" but meanwhile the guitar world turns with so many young guitarists guesting via the internet from all over the world. Names like Sithu Aye, James Norbert Ivanyi, Martin Miller etc.
