Tattoo, She's the Woman, Bullethead, Outta Space, Big River and Beats Workin' are the obvious re-makes, and As Is has been discussed here. Dave created a melody over Ed's old riff and Wolf probably arranged it.

Blood and Fire is "Ripley" from The Wild Life, with Dave creating a melody.
Honeybabysweetiedoll is likely something Dave brought in, as it sounds a lot like one of his No Holds BBQ songs (Flex version 2)
Dave wrote Stay Frosty and Wolf arranged it

My guess on Trouble With Never and You and Your Blues is they are like Stay Frosty -- songs Dave brought in that Wolf (and maybe Ed) arranged.

I don't think Dave could write the music for China Town -- my guess is it's something Ed created from an old riff like As Is and Dave just did the melody

I've never had a problem with this. As far as most of the public, and even casual VH fans, know its was all new. We are the only ones who had heard the demos from the 70s.

I seem to remember Ed talking about Trouble with Never as being a song he put together going for the Jimi Hendrix vibe, but I can't remember where I read that. There's a good chance he did that several years prior to the ADKOT sessions, though. According to Dave the four of them never sat down in a room and wrote a song for that album.

I thought As Is and Chinatown were the 2 "astonishing new tunes, the hands fell off the clock" from 2001-ish, that Dave mentioned in his open letter to the fans when the reunion fell through back then?
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Yeah, that too. It was around FUCK or Balance and Mike said in an interview they had a song that they called "Hendrix Jam" and sounded like "Are You Gonna Go My Way." HAS to be TTWN.

Ray Luzier said in an interview (this decade sometime after ADKOT) those were "Tattoo" and "She's the Woman."

That doesn't sound right, because those aren't and weren't new tunes.

I agree, but that's what the man said. Dave said "new" but maybe they weren't "new" new in '00-'01 when the hands fell off the clock.

What do you think of Van Halen's comeback album 'A Different Kind 0f Truth'?
I didn't like it at first, but now I love it. You look forward to that next record coming out from your favorite bands. It's been a while since I've had the feeling of a new Van Halen record in my hand. But it's funny to me, because when I was in (David Lee Roth's) band he showed me four or five songs from the new record. 'She's The Woman,' 'Tattoo' and all those songs I heard 10 years ago. It was a trip when I heard 'Tattoo' on the radio, because I remember hearing it at Dave's house. I had a grin on my face when I heard these songs now.

I remember reading an interview with either Ed or Mike about the 2000 studio work. They said that Dave came with all of this "dance music" that he wanted VH to do. I always think of that when i hear Honeybabysweetydoll. I bet this is the sort of stuff they were talking about.

    "And all those songs"

Not just the two you mentioned. He heard them, just like I did when the VH demos hit the internet, but they weren't the ones Dave was talking about back then, I'm pretty sure.

Yes, he played them some Chemical Brothers. That's what he was into.

And I remember Al being quoted to the effect of "Let's do one like Dave wants than we'll do what we normally do"

Dave played his (presumably original, pre-ADKOT) version of Honeybabysweetydoll on some video thing that he did around the time of the ADKOT album release. I ripped it at the time from a video that consisted of footage shot from a camera moving through NYC traffic, and still have the MP3 rip but not the vide - I haven't seen it anywhere online, and not sure if many other people know about it or have heard it?

It's a dance tune, with very good use of some 70s soul samples for a female vocal loop. I always thought it was pretty good. It is Dave's speak-singing, but a little faster and more toned down volume-wise than on the VH version.

If someone wants to post it - I don't know how to post MP3 - send me a PM and I'll see if I can send you the file.
