That's awesome! I remember right after that show, when the first vids started hitting youtube, and the first time I watched Unchained for the first time. Even just sitting at my computer I could practically feel the energy. One of the very best moments of that entire tour.

1984 did it for me as well. The songs, the guitar and keyboard sounds, the songs, the videos, Eddie!!! Not only my favorite VH album, it's my favorite album of all time.

I didn't know Sammy prior, so was on with the change. Loved the 5150 album, and also dug EEAS. We wouldn't have gotten either of them in the forms they are in (ingrained in us) if Dave didn't quit, so I thank Dave for quitting!

But for this fan, 5150 and onward ultimately proved more listenable/cooler and stuff I wanted to play (ie; try to).

Not critiquing anyone, but based upon interviews and stories of what really went down, Dave quit VH just about as much as Sam did.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

That's funny -- I was also at the 3-1-12 show for my 40th... energy was so amazing.

I think I told this but it was early in the twitter days (for me at least) and I barely knew what I was doing, but a few days before the show I tweeted to Wolf "Hey, it's my birthday for the 3-1 show -- can you open with You Really Got Me just for me?" -- thinking I was so smart since that's what they opened every show with... and when they opened with Unchained I felt like he was trolling me.

Then, after two songs Dave stops the show to say "Hey we have a special event here -- it's someone's four-" and because I was so high I thought he was going to say 40th birthday... haha. (he said 400th show for Nick)

Man, that was a GREAT show. Again, very high

What I love about Van Halen is that they never took themselves too seriously, but at the same time they were better than everyone else. It's like they were so good they didn't have to act like it. You watch these other huge rock bands and the guys take it so seriously. Everything with VH always seemed to be a tongue in cheek type of thing that just screamed "we're here just to have fun and have a great time." Not that others don't give a similar vibe (AC/DC comes to mind), but no one quite hit the vibe I look for in music like VH.

Their musicianship was off the charts too, which makes it all the better. Eddie and Alex are doing incredible things on their instruments that I couldn't do without decades of practice, and they are doing it half drunk with smiles on their faces while bounding around stage or behind the kit. Then you have Dave up there who just commands your attention and in the course of the same show will make you say to your friends "what a fuck up!" "that's hilarious" and "holy shit that was badass." It was always entertaining.

Of course I can't leave Mike out. His high harmonies and smile were what glued it all together for me.

They just seemed to be able to weave their way from rocking out at full speed to making you laugh to rocking out again in the course of a few songs and it all blended together seamlessly and effortlessly. It was just cool.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

It's all the things mentioned so far. But the thing that really stands out to me is the sonic quality of it. Pardon my circular logic here, but I love VH because it SOUNDS like VH. Thick, chewy, heavy, slippery, nimble, dynamic, warm, and dusted with cocaine. Barring a few turds on III, every album - including even the worst songs - has that sound. You can hear it even in the simplest passages, from the first chord of Humans Being to the caramel-coated keyboards in WCTBL to the wiry chord stabs in Push Comes to Shove to the epic outros of 1984. Like thunder. But syrupy and seductive too.

No one sounds like Van Halen. Their music just literally SOUNDS better than anyone else's even when the song is not their best.

I agree with all this ^^^. Even their keyboard tunes and ballads have the VH sound to them. Like Sammy once said - "It's very special music, and you can only get it here...".

I was 13 in 1979 and just starting to get into Rock N Roll music

I had a Styx album,I loved Blue Collar Man,I heard RWTD at a local skating rink one night for the first time and it just blew my mind, they had such a big bad sound, they sounded like nothing Id ever heard and I was instantly a fan,I didnt even know theyre name

Ive been hopelessly addicted ever since,

An absolute crime that song isnt a classic rock radio staple. It's strange that WB didnt really push for more radio exposure for VH tunes back then. Big selling albums, bigger selling tours, yet there doesnt seem to have been a lot of studio backing to get songs played all over the radio, particularly on WACF and FW. Despite VH putting on two of the biggest tours of those years, regardless of music genre.
