Not many can cop Al's groove. I saw some footage of Sam's birthday thing and i'm not sure who the drummer was, but he was also way off Al's groove. I think Jason Bonham is a great drummer though.

Bonham is a great player. There's no shame in not being in Al's class. But, yes, he doesnt have Al's groove or feel, even though none of the VH songs they are playing are among Al's best or most interesting lines.
But that just illustrates how difficult it is to replicate AVH on what seem to be straightforward lines. WIL is a master class in touch and feel and playing to serve the song, but Bonham sounds like he's playing that tune with 2 lb sledgehammers.

Some things I just don't understand. Like hearing How Many Say I and thinking it needs to be on an album. Another is knowing that VH will be in your live catalog yet you hire a guitarist who handles it as well as Edward Scissorhands doing hand stuff to a woman.
I am surprised with Jason though. Thought he would do better.
That said you simply just can't copy Ed and Alex's sense of timing.

Bonham is a great drummer, just solid. He has a very distinctive style and it works for him with zepplin material. Style wise he is just too distinctive and different than Alex for it to work. Its like whatever Eddie plays he still sounds like Eddie not whoever he is covering. Bonham is not that level but he does have a very distinct sound and the gap gets a spotlight when he plays stuff by someone who also is distinctive but in a different way.

John bonham is a great drummer. Especially emulating his dad. But as a rock drummer covering someone else’s music, not so much.

"A lot of people ask me which Van Halen singer was better. You can't compare them. It's like asking which guitarist is better. Nobody is better than anybody. Every player is their own person."-Edward Van Halen

I agree that Bonham playing VH tunes isn't nearly the same but he's world's better than Lauser....and I like Lauser.

I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

I know Sam addressed why CF isn't doing anything in the interview (loves the chemistry with Chad and Chad is always touring) but he obviously loves playing with Jason. I mean Jason is currently in The Circle and they made an album. So obviously there is chemistry there. I realize that he may not be Chad but considering you can get Joe and Mike to make an album, why not simply settle for a a compromise?
I mean IMO Satch, Mike and Jason is a bit better than Vic, Mike and Jason. It may not be Chad but given the choice of recording with Vic or Satch, well it seems kind of easy. Heck you don't even need to call it CF> Call it Turkeyfoot, Moose Knuckle or Crows Feet.

I used to agree with everyone here: Jason didn't do the VH material justice. However after playing it for several years, I've noticed some notable improvements. Still not as good as AVH, but I've always thought that it was actually HARDER to emulate AVH than to copy EVH. I've pretty much never heard a VH cover with up to par drumming.
