Don Cherry fired today for his comments on people not wearing poppies. Not surprising but a disappointing end to his career.

What's the general feeling in Canada about this? Are people supportive of Don or of him getting fired? This feels very much like a vocal minority gave an outcry and executives buckled. The guy was such an institution I wonder how much additional backlash they'll receive.

Don's comments always seemed like the kind of things the majority of people think but don't dare say out loud for fear of this very thing, whether they are hockey related or not.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Iíd say the opinions are pretty well divided in half. I see plenty of people calling the decision to fire him a disgrace and plenty who are ecstatic with the decision.

Among the general population probably 50/50. Among hockey fans it's more pro Cherry.

I think the firing was a huge overreaction to a mob of mostly people who don't watch hockey in the first place. But Don owns this too. He had a chance to make a point in a way that would unify instead of divide. He had a chance to apologize/clarify but wouldn't. What made him great, his brash comments was also what finished him. He's been skating on the edge for a long time.

Most people in Canada are not happy. It was overkill to fire Don. The reason Don Cherry is popular is he says what is on his mind whether you like him or not.

I am not impressed with Ron MacLean either. His speech today on HNIC was terrible. He is not a friend I would want to have. All he cared about was his job. He really bashed Don when he was in Welland last week on T.V.

Nice win by the young Rangers, of course it always helps when the opposing team hits the post 3 or 4 times.

I haven't looked it up, but as a hockey fan with a casual attention towards teams not my own, I feel like Toronto has had a lot of turnover in the front office the last several years. Between Presidents, GMs, and now coaches, it makes it tough for anyone to really get comfortable and put their vision in place. Your left with everyone getting one chance to get it right, and it they don't, they're out.

I just glanced at Wikipedia and they're on their 4th GM in 7 years.

Lol, Toronto is a crazy market.

Headed to my first game of the season tonight to see the Blues take on the Flames. I haven't been down to Enterprise Center in over a year so I haven't seen the new renovations they've done. Apparently they're wearing their throwback 90's jerseys tonight which were never my favorite, but should be good a dose of nostalgia.

Fun game to watch last night. Their 90's jerseys were fun to see, but please God don't bring these back on a regular basis! The Flames looked out of sorts and defeated last night. It ended up being a 5-0 win for the Blues despite the Flames outshooting the Blues. I think they had over 40 shots but Binnington came up strong with the shut out. They only had a few solid chances, though. Most of the shots were from the outside and Calgary just couldn't do anything with the deflection or the rebound. That's the way it goes sometimes.

Enterprise Center looks quite a bit different than in years past. There's a greater variety of food vendors that give out of towners a sampling of the local fare, and the bathrooms have been refreshed complete with video ads above the urinals. Really, the whole experience couldn't have been any better between the game and the venue. I'm going to have to try to get back to another game this year.

I wish the NHL discussion these days was more about hockey than politics/culture.
