    Default Kinks Reunion

Just heard on "Coast to Coast" the Kinks brothers have "buried the hatchet" and are planning a reunion tour. Has to be a sign of good things to come from the band who performed the greatest cover of all time. As Ray Davies said when asked about the VH cover, "I only wish we could have sounded like them on the original". Paraphrasing of course. Wishful thinking Fudd is correct and all that we are hoping for? Yep. But why the hell not!

Looks like the Davies need some bucks. Just don't play anything from Sleepwalker it sucked I still want my money back for that album.

The Kinks damaged their legacy with their inactivity and fighting.

"But, fucking with Brook is like fucking with hot shit on and ax handle. You just don't get a grip"-track5

'This hamburger don't need no helper"- David Lee Roth

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango

"But being number one doesn’t really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen

The VH cover of YRGM speaks for itself but I love the original. Such a raw, 60's rock sound. It's not a song I hear too often anymore but when I do I crank that thing up. It's a stellar original song in its own right.

No way. Jukebox Hero has the greatest power chord moment in the history of music.

When that song came out it was enormous. Instant classic.

I just never cared for it. IMO, it felt contrived.

I've always thought "Jukebox Hero" was Foreigner channeling their inner Bad Co. While I love the song, all I ever think when I hear it is, "Imagine what Paul and the boys could have done with this..."

I could never stand it because I heard the VH version first and it was so different than what Kinks did. Everything VH changed sounded like a huge improvement to my ears.

•Guitar tone: The last thing you want is to have your guitar tone compared to Eddie's tone on VHI. But to have it directly compared playing the same riff? Freaking ouch! Not the Kinks fault since it's 60s equipment and it hasn't aged well (no one would want to sound that way now). But it's still the sound on the recording and still doesn't begin to compare.

•Singing: I really hate the "robot voice" on the original. Dave added some soul to the singing. Particularly on the little melody Dave added at the end of the first line on "now". Dave's voice is more pleasant to my ears too.

•Guitar playing: It's freaking Eddie Van Halen imbuing every guitar part with a cleansing fire that overwhelms the Austin Powers vibe of the original garage band riffs while inventing a new way to play the guitar. Someone handed Eddie a two chord riff and he heard a world of possibilities in his head. The solo leaves Dave Davies in a smoking heap on the shoulder of the guitar highway.

•Harmony singing: It's VH harmony vocals verses Kinks harmony vocal. Yeah that's not close. The Mike secret weapon piles on the blowout. The Kinks Lilliputian voices are replaced by the soaring VH voices with a heavy dose of testosterone for good measure.

•Drumming: To make matters worse for the Davies brothers, VH has a set of brothers too. The "other Van Halen" just happens to be one of the great rock drummers who introduced a unique snare tone on your song and laid down a drum track overflowing with energy and attitude.

To me, Van Halen created one of the most improved covers ever recorded. Probably didn't help that the second Kinks song I ever heard was All Day And All Of The Night. Kinda sounded like the same song.

Even the Kinks didn't want to sound like the 1964 version by 1979.

I like it ok, but all I can hear is Lou Gramm starting to lose his voice in that song. His straining vocal bugs me.
