I get the wish-list aspect there, but high-reputation thoroughbreds like John 5, Portnoy (or Vai/Sheehan/Bissonette, for that matter) cost money. Roth is the name on the marquee all by itself, and it doesn't make sense to shell out for a high-profile band for a residency in a 2,500-seat hall. Pay a weekly salary to hungry no-names and keep overhead low.

Sorry, but Vic is still in a class all by himself when it comes to butchering VH tunes.

The thing is, Eddie's sound and style was pretty revolutionary even though the end of the 80's. But in the last 30+ years, that sound and style has been dissected and copied to the point every kid that walks into Guitar Center or posts on YouTube seems to play a credible version of Eruption and there's a glut of VH cover bands in most major cities that play note-perfect versions of the tunes. When Dave puts together basically an average cover band who plays the usual burnout tunes competently yet he himself is a shadow of his glory years, the whole thing really looks silly.

John is simply not available and will be opening for Queensryche during then. He lives on the road so matching schedules especially w an extended rehearsal schedule made it pretty much not even a possibility.
At some point they will do shows but John is booked till about next Oct. Already

Would have been nice if Dave could have booked John 5 on guitar for these shows. Maybe Portnoy on drums since he plays with everyone. These guys have zero energy. It's basically karaoke.

    WTF af tbh?

This career dismount is going rough.

Dave could form a better band with some of us here! There's no need for three guitars playing a single riff, and the grooves are as stiff as Herman Munster. Way too slow. The largely blank expressions on their faces also say everything. How about faking some stage presence, fellas?

I'm sure Dave believes in using every last drop of toothpaste from the tube, but boy...this makes me look at my own self in the mirror more closely. 50 is around the corner!

I understand all that. But the product will ultimately suffer, so as a businessman and guitar player - I think he would have been better served to book a John 5 and a few better known guys who know how to work a stage vs what I saw in that video. At Dave's age - I'd be more concerned with the product I'm putting on stage for what could be the last time as opposed to saving $$$ and skimping on the guitar player. Especially since he's paying 3 of them anyway. John 5 is a HUGE VH fan, and prob would have jumped at the chance, but who knows - maybe EVH wasn't down with that.

Not only the $$$ issue, IMO, Dave doesn't want a 'name' backing band to steal any of the thunder he thinks he still has.

John would love to do it if he was available but he is not.

My point is, Dave has ALWAYS had world class guitar players on stage with him. You can't half-ass VH. It's one of the few bands where the guitar playing is MORE important than anything vocally. That's why he always plucked guys from the Atomic Punks...

I used John 5 as an example. But There's GOT to be someone out there who would love the exposure who can play better than what I heard in that vid. There's half a dozen guys that post here that can play VH closer to the borefest in that vid...
