LWAN RULES! I can't tell you how many times I watched my VHS. I had it converted to audio and burned to a CD years ago and wore it out. Great days!

Although, i wasn't a fan of it back in the day, it really is a special performance (and a very inspired one at that),
and, most definitely, it should have been an official CD release, or a companion disc with a 5150 reissue.

People will disagree, but i think they peaked with Sammy on 5150.
Eddie was still "Eddie" and slippery, and the band sounded both happy & fired up.

I saw them on the OU812/Monsters thing, and they seemed already burnt out.
Sammy gave 100 percent, but the others looked a bit tired.

I do think OU812 had some good stuff, though.

But 5150/LWAN, are most definitely essential.
I do not think that other live DVD they did, comes close.

The 5150 album and tour was jazzed up with honeymoon status.

It really wasn't until FUCK that those four guys really kicked into high grade professional power rock. Much as I hate the album, the '91-'93 tours are pretty much the pinnacle of live Van Halen prowess.

Though I have a soft spot for their OU812 mini tour post Monsters of Rock.

The OU812 tour still retained some of that raw, live energy. But the 91-93 FUCK tour was where the band really sounded "overrehearsed" and the performances became predictable, even pedestrian by VH standards, on many tunes. By 95, the energy and enthusiasm was really waning, but they werent getting along at all by then. Still obviously some great performances, but nothing that touched the early tours, or even compared to the 86-88 tours.

True, but they were still awesome in the '90s performance-wise. Just not as much as before.

VH didn't actually fall into a very "set" setlist until after the FUCK tour. They played a lot of things spontaneously through the FUCK tour. I have audio of them doing crossroads, whole lotta love...lots of stuff. I won't argue that they didn't become a little predictable it just didn't happen until the RHRN tour and then it was really predictable

Yes, but I'm basing it on the standards they set for themselves. The 91 MTV Awards is a good example. They were better than everything that came after them, but that performance of Poundcake by VH standards, is very pedestrian.

But, that's sort of the way it was on the FUCK tour. That was the beginning of where I was starting to be able to predict what fills, and where, in a lot of the songs both Al and Ed were going to play. And, of course, the Mike who was taking a solo during extended jams of YRGM on the 79 tour or was blazing it up during tunes like Bottoms Up, was long gone and was playimg seemingly endless runs of root 8th notes on quite a few tunes. I'm exaggerating a bit, but not by much.

They just, as a band, kind of got in a rut of playing most of those tunes from FUCK almost identical to the album versions night after night.

I agree. The way they played the songs and the way they performed. Especially Eddie who seemed way less active on stage.

    Same here.

That OU812 Fall/Winter Arena tour was good. It was almost more than just a mini-tour, they did about 50 shows in the USA & Japan from Sept 1988 to Feb 1989.

Even at the end when they got back to NORCAL in late Nov 88, they put on a good show. Tokyo 89 is solid as well with a great version of 5150.

It was def my favorite Sam Halen tour of all of them.
Huh I didnít remember it was as much as 50 shows. I thought it was a handful of hot US markets and the Japan run. Interesting.

Both the OU812 album and tour was Van Hagar at their best.

Pretty sure it was about a three month US tour. Didn't get to a MOR gig, but I remember them advertising the fall tour on the radio. No way I was missing that. Ended up going to the Cedar Rapids, Iowa gig. Right about Halloween. Sam made reference to it. Band was blazing.

All set to go to the Peoria, Il gig-about a week later- when I came down with a case of food poisoning.
