Such a awesome show. Still watch it periodically. And, I've seen, like we all have, EVH guitar solos many many times, but the solo he took on this particular show makes the hair on my arm stand up, still. His solo was put together and on point. I guess that's why there are so many people discovering it again with all these youtube fan react videos. I think the reaction videos are goofy, but I also find it refreshing that an entire generation of kids are seeing it and seem to be blown away by it. So, I guess that's the silver lining in it. Shows that EVH talents can span a multitude of generations and still have a, "Wow OMG" factor. EVH is just a fucking beast and will be remembered as such well into the future.

I really think the 5150 stuff on LWAN is so superior to the studio cuts. Ed's guitar tone sounds much better, the tempos aren't as plodding and it just sounds more like what I think Van Halen should sound like.
I did that with every VH and VH-related bootleg VHS tape I had. Surround-sound stereo, baby! I'll never forget the piercing, high-pitch squealing sound from the crowd cheering in the US Fest. When I had the cassette cranked full-blast in Chevy Celebrity tape deck.

YES, it was played on MTV shortly after BOBW had run it's course.

I love LWAN. I had become a massive VH fan when I started playing drums in 1982. I so wanted to see the 1984 tour but at 13 I had no way to get there as it was almost two hours away. I did get to go in 1986 though! I saw the show in Worcester Mass just two weeks before they filmed this. The band was on fire and as 15 year old, it changed my life. Alex was my childhood hero and to see him in person blazing around that monster sized set was magical. I definitely think this should have been put out as a live album. I actually recorded it from a radio broadcast that had good enough and wild thing on it.

There is an Easter egg on the 2004 DVD, a short, silent clip of a man driving a small car and playing guitar. It can be accessed by opening the VTS files on your computer.

That's an interesting topic that I've never seen discussed here...

What does the LWAN 5.1 surround mix sound like???... was it truly remixed with special panning separations and/or automation changes???

I guess few people even have a 5.1 setup anyway, so the standard pre-existing 1986 LWAN stereo mix would have been 99% of the fan's listening experience.

May have to check into it.

To be honest with you, it's been a long time since the last time I watched LWAN. Maybe even before the release of the DVD, which I own.

I think I need to see it again and, more important, to listen to it with better ears in order to notice these stereo mix and stuff.

Honestly, I never listen to concert films in surround. The two mains cranked is the best way to go.

I actually have a bootleg audio of LWAN that includes the live version of Good Enough, that didn't make the video - TBH, if you've not heard it you're not really missing much. My only complaint is that the bass is somewhat lacking, but maybe that's because that was the sound of that era ?
Does the noise in my head bother you ?

I consider it a live album, and by far their best one.

Only minor studio touchups and it sounds like a perfect VH show.

RHRN sucks as it really isn't a live album, and the setlist blows goats for quarters.

Tokyo Dome? A few good nuggets, but overall no reason to listen to it.

I like Ed's playing and Sammy's singing on RHRN, so I still enjoy listening to it.
To me, it's about the music... Not the crowd noise... Live vs touched up? I don't care, as long as the end result sounds good to me, and RHRN does. I'm obviously a fan of the material, so that's another check in the plus column for me.

I've seen this before, of course, yet great to revisit it!
Good Enough is absolutely one of Van Halen's awesome rockers, and absolutely should have made the cut for LWAN. It was the opening track from their first album and definitely set the tone for me. I loved the pairing of Sammy & the boys, musically/vocally/visually.

To the OP? YES, Live Without a Net should definitely have released as a live album!!!
Similar to the pairing of the RHRN cd and concert video. I'd add Good Enough, drop the drum and bass solos (for the live album), and there's one hell of a good time!
