I'm not defending the production on OU812 in anyway but credit for the production includes "Van Halen" along with Donn Landee. I mean did ed not do anything production wise or have any say on the final product?

That's why I said, "fair or not." Donn may have been the one at the controls, but the band I'm pretty sure had final say on everything, and someone should have pointed out that maybe, just maybe, the bottom end needed to be turned up a wee bit.

A shame, because to me OU812 is easily the best Sam era album. Forget remastering, that album is in need of remixing.

And actually, IIRC there is actually no "Producer" credit on OU812. I think it actually says, "Recorded by Donn Landee and Van Halen."

Lol, almost like they knew "Produced" would be overstating it a bit.

Landee was more than likely a scapegoat.

VH's history is full of them.

I think it is an odd coincidence that as VH is cutting Michael Anthony's share in the profits, they are making the bass barely audible on the album. Just saying.

I thought you brought up good points, which inspired my Landee/Ed bromance post.

I read every early VH interview as a kid, and Donn was constantly given praise.
Sometimes i felt Ted, who thought Ed was a one in a billion talent & stated that much,
    got the shaft.

I loved what Ted did was those albums, the vibe too.

But i remember, later on, Ed kinda had zero interest in revisiting the Donn Landee contribution.

It struck me as odd, that later period Ed wasn't as keen on him.

    Something shifted.

Oh no I didnt take it that way. Just two guys having a conversation about a favorite album from our childhood that needed more junk in the trunk.

Still I love Al's drums on that album. Just listen to how massive his toms sound on the intro to Sucker! As Is intro reminds me of Sucker. Sucker is still a top 5 Sam tune for me. His toms sound huge on BIB and AFU as well.

I love Ed's tone too. I always think of it as sort of his Sam era WACF type tone. Just more raw and not as overprocessed as the other Sam era records.

Most likely the issue with Donn and Ed came down to money. Maybe they wanted to be sole producers of OU812 and he objected? Maybe money was to be more if he was producer compared to engineer? Maybe he threatened to go to court over it and they simply settled? Then again it could be as simple as they simply had an argument and their relationship was strained. I mean that does happen even outside of Van Halen.

some of the drums do sound outstanding (to me) especially on Cabo Wabo.

I did listen to Yankee Rose today and I was very surprised how good it sounded. I really wish we could have heard a Templeman produced VH record with Sam, I know Ted helped out on FUCK but I mean a full blown production like the Dave era stuff.

this is what I listened to, it sounds better than I remember it sounding:

maybe it was remastered or something along the way.

Yeah, I always thought EEAS was very well produced, especially compared to 5150. Then, LOL, Skyscraper sounded thin by comparison. Kind of showed what a pro Ted was.

I believe Ted basically just worked on the vocal tracks with Sam for FUCK. I agree, it's too bad Ted didnt produce OU812. I think Ted was wasting his time with Bulletboys in the late 80s lol.

Somebody in another thread mentioned they wouldve liked to have seen Dweezil Zappa produce a VH album. I had never thought of that before, but the idea intrigues me.

Jimmy Page was one I wanted to take a crack at producing VH. If only because he always got such warm, huge drum tones for Bonham.

I never would have thought of Dweezil producing a VH record. I still only really know him from when he was on mtv and a few random YouTube clips. He has that cool VH guitar too.

I would have liked one more vh record with Andy Johns. Maybe 1 with Bob Rock, I know that’s generic but he really can make bands sound great production wise. I wouldn’t mind hearing him produce something with either Sam or Dave. ALAE sounds good production wise if I remember right.

Next week is the first show. The residency is selling as expected and a much better experience going into it for all. It is a great room he is playing, just about my favorite in Vegas.

As much as I love DLR, I just don't have much interest in his Vegas residency.

What a travesty that we will never get a true Van Halen reunion.
