I chose Blackmore, because the man is a samurai on the stratocaster.
I just LOVE his soloing and inflections and blues/classical hybrid.

Having said that, Jimmy Page never got me as a lead player, yet i adore
him as a composer & creative genius.

His playing is so slinky & awesome, and he does things that are so cool, that i
    would never think of.

Just the parts he comes up with, even the overdubs.

    Both guys are brilliant musicians.

I still say Blackmore and Ace Frehley had more influence on Eddie than Eddie has ever admitted to.

Stargazer is one of the greatest songs ever composed.
Has there ever been another guitar player with more memorable riffs than Jimmy Page?

My personal pick would be Jimmy Page.
I liken it to that Jake E. Lee interview where he's asked about Jeff Beck and Pete Townsend. "One ( Beck) is a guitar God, and one got to be in a band and play all those great songs..." Yup.

Page was nowhere near the best technical guitar player, but he was the king of the mountain when it came to composing great songs on the guitar.

I know I've posted this dozens of times on here, but this is just a brilliant example of songwriting with God knows how many guitar tracks …

Could Blackmore be a better technical player? Sure but he can't touch the music that Page wrote. I say this despite Eddie basically saying that Page sucks. (Is that true or just my bad memory or urban legend?)

Way back in the early 80s, Eddie said something like "Page plays like a 5 year old with a broken hand." He later apologized for that stupid comment.

And Page can't touch Blackmore as a soloist.

Blackmore was a guy who continually got better, hitting peaks with the "Burn" album and "Rising."
    He kept going forward.

Even as a kid, i thought, Blackmore should be on this guitar Rushmore, because he smokes
both Page & Clapton, though i was thinking in technical ability/soloing terms.

Blackmore has this snake charmer thing, where he can just pull things out of his bag.
His Blues stuff is so effortless, but then he hits a blinding alternate picked classical thing.

He'd do the violin effect with his volume knob, then just get reckless with the tremolo bar.

I still feel like that guy was a massive influence on so many, yet never get's credit.

If memory serves me correctly, Ace used to do the same basic Eruption tapping notes as Eddie on the Alive II album which was recorded before VH1....Did Eddie see Ace do it or did Ace see Eddie do it during the Gene Simmons demos? We will never know....Hell, It might have been the Alive I album, I'm really not sure....

He does very sloppy pick tapping on Alive II in "Shock Me."

Nothing like Eruption, and i do love Ace, but not hearing the supposed EVH
    connection.

I find it hard to believe that Eddie Van Halen ripped off Ace Frehley.

Spot on! I love that tune AND the whole Rising record.

But Page not having memorable riffs?

Oh, I never got the “he never gets credit” thing. Every major guitar slinger talks him up, he’s in every guitar magazine, his riffs are always mentioned, “Smoke On The Water” had an entire festival dedicated to it, what more do people want?

    And songwriting was great too.

The first time I heard this credit thing was when Brian May said it. I am as baffled today as the day I first heard it.
