Ok listen to it with good headphones. You honestly can’t hear the lack of resonance? An acoustic would resonate. There’s nothing like that. And I hear the pickguard.

Yes he has. He has complimented DLR's guitar playing in interviews before. Now, he has also taken light hearted jabs at him as well, like "when we first met he was playing chords wrong", stuff like that.

DLR is a competent finger picker and good enough on the acoustic to accompany himself, and that is all a singer songwriter really needs to be anyway.

Agree to disagree for now, Fudd. No harm and no foul.
Fwiw, I don't hear any 'pickguard' in any other acoustic song or solo that I can think of at the moment...

Dave did and does a lot of open/altered tunings, given his penchant for blues/folk etc. tunes. I don't think Ed experimented much with that (at all?) in the formative years. Dropped D on Fair Warning is a far cry from seeing a dude play an entire chord with one finger, and having the 'shapes' you know be in different places... Not to mention different inversions and such.

The intro to TYWH is NOT an unplugged electric, mic'd.

You can hear the heavy strings, the attack, the wood.
Completely different sound & feel than an unplugged strat.

Eddie has strong hands, but you can still hear the "fight" the acoustic gives back,
when you do electric stuff, like pull offs.

It sounds like a very direct recording of the acoustic, not boomy, to give it that
"we're doing this in front of you" feel.

But if that were an unplugged electric, you wouldn't get that bluegrass kinda
    twang, he got.

You wouldn't hear the heavier strings & the push back those strings are giving.

If he did that on electric, it would be too clean & speedy, like when he played Spanish Fly
on electric, during the '79 tour.
It would sound way too effortless.

    And acoustics have pickguards too.

He's doing pick rakes in TYWH, which sound very percussive.

Im gonna say big fat no to that. Straight up Acoustic guitar. I'm not a guitar bad ass by any means at all. But, that is not an electric guitar with a mic up close. Plus you have thought any number of us idiot van halen fans would have heard this story before. Out.

More than competent, really good playing. But when and where did Dave learn it well enough to play it in the studio?

There's a difference between qualifying for inclusion on the list and actually deserving to be on the list. Of course those two songs aren't going to make the list, you're better than that. The point was that Everlong as a one off acoustic version of the electric original should not qualify. If you need an example less Van Halen and more potential deserving, use the acoustic version of Layla. Or Watching the Wheels. Or Born to Run. Or Creep. Whether they should make the list or not is irrelevant, Everlong being on the list is stupid.
