I think the biggest factor was everyone wanted that "WHO THE FUCK IS EDDIE VAN HALEN" shirt from that era. Not so much the III era of the circus themed band merch....

Is this Dave Criblez or Dave Marcone? I've been really enjoying your podcast.

    So, it was...

1974 - the rounded edge logo. Call it the original logo, club days logo, Mark Stone logo, or 1974 logo.

1977 - the jagged logo, or mountain range logo. This was designed after they were singed, but was only used on the Looney Tunes promo.

1978 - the iconic winged logo, first seen on VH1 album, released Feb '78.
Fair point. I honestly haven't seen anything outside of a few buddies' old collected flyers from the Pasadena days and some bootleg covers with that logo. You don't know of any actual merch or single sleeves or anything like that, that were printed up back then? Old pre-company tees or anything like that?

LOL. I always thought it was kind of derivative of Heart's logo, but I dunno if Heart even had their signature logo back then.

I still wear my long sleeve VH3 tee. It's in pretty great condition. I bought it a size too large back then, now of course in my old age it fits me. Then again, an old geezer like me has no bidness wearing black tees with flames on the sleeves. I think I wore it to a backstage meet and greet with Robert Randolph at the Roxy a while back, and we chatted VH accordingly.

Dave M., and thank you very much! Like you, we do what we can to wave the Van Halen flag high...no matter what the logo is on it.

They used the Dave Era logo on some of the early Sammy Era merch too. Not often though.

That is actually pretty cool, as it has the familiar striped motif and logo recognition that fans of both main eras will embrace. I dig it! Seen it before, yet still dig it!

I made that logo back in 1997. Jeff ran an article in The Inside magazine about coming up with a new logo since Gary was in the band. My logo along with about 10 others were featured in the magazine. Gary said he was going to play both eras in concert so I thought the combination of both logos best represented the new era with Gary. Another member added the stripes a couple of years ago. Looks much better than my black and white logo.

My son got a tattoo of this on his arm.
