From Dennis Miller introducing them as something like "Here are 3/4 Van Halen..." to Eddie's obvious discomfort, to them all looking sorry and embarrassed for Roth's behavior, I never once thought he was back in the band at that time. It was cool to see them, yet my universe wasn't crushed when they carried on without him.

I saw it for what it was; a project (2 songs on BOV1) for the fans and an appearance on TV. I was more bummed that they didn't continue with Sammy, more than with Dave after that night. And that's coming from a fan who liked the III album

I can't believe anyone in the Van Halen camp could have been that stupid to think that walking out there with Dave while having no intention of continuing on with him was a good idea.

What the fuck did they think was going to happen?

Just mind bogglingly stupid. Probably the dumbest thing they've ever done and that's saying a lot. But that night was even worse than the RRHOF in my opinion.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

it was hit and miss. Some markets they did pretty well, others were down dramatically. They picked a bad time to do this too. Same thing happened to Motley who went from selling out arenas to playing theatres.

This has been discussed before. MTV and Warner Bros. told them that they wouldn't hype/promote the new album unless they did the walk on with Dave. The powers that be had a lot of clout. I blame them, rather than Eddie... They knew full well that Dave wasn't back.

The band begrudgingly went out on that stage with Roth, thinking about the bigger picture.

It was at Bristow VA. So bad Gary said to the few people on the lawn to come take seats in the arena. Embarrassment for Ed 15 miles from DC on a summer night.

On the flip side, I saw them at Madison Square Garden and while it wasn't sold out, it was at least 3/4 full. Like Mike said, hit or miss.

Toronto was the same thing. They were still popular enough to still sell well in their big markets (which speaks to the power of the brand) but by 98 music was changing and doing another singer change was insanely dangerous. Unless they came out with a legitimate hit song (and when the last time VH had one of those?) they were gonna have trouble at the gate. You can't tease a reunion and then pull it back.

    Sure.

If that was it, it was an extremely shortsighted, idiotic decision by the band, no matter how you want to sugarcoat it, since you've never wanted Dave back in the band anyway.

Well then Ed should have called their bluff and told them to fuck off.

Like Warner Bros wasn't going to promote the new album from one of their biggest selling acts.

    A lot of truth there.

Still, somebody should have realized this wasn't a good idea if Dave being in the band wasn't on solid ground.

Mitch knew once he saw Dave walk out there, no one else would be accepted. He knew.

No one pulling the strings could see the pushback that would happen?

    It's Ed's fault.

Lot's of contributing factors, but Ed decided to bring Roth back behind Sam's back, he decided to get rid of Sam, he agreed to go on stage with DLR, then he decided to go with Gary Cherone.
