I still don't see how any of Sammy's pre-VH music was "harder" as a whole than Van Hagar so I don't know what you or others who have said that mean. Yes, "I Don't Need Love" is harder than "Feels So Good," but again, as a whole we're talking about and it's not even close when you compare them to "Best of Both Worlds," "Get Up," "A.F.U.," "Sucker," "Poundcake," "Judgement Day," "Pleasure Dome," "The Dream Is Over," "The Seventh Seal," "Don't Tell Me," "Aftershock," "Humans Being," "Learning to See," etc.

Do I think he would have gotten better as an artist had he never joined? Not as good as he became as a songwriter and player from being in VH all those years like he did, but yes, he would have still improved. See his Capital output versus his Geffen output. He became significantly better from "Standing Hampton"-on.

Sammy has repeatedly mentioned that post VOA he was planning on retiring from the music business. I don't know if he was serious. If he'd stuck to that, he'd have tracked himself to being a one-hit wonder. He might have gotten bored and tried to make a comeback. However, I think by that time (late 1980s-early 90s) Grunge (ugh) kicked in and that would've buried him.

The formula that works best for him is a solid drummer, a solid bass player, and an outstanding lead guitarist.

No disrespect, but the original premise of this thread is just plain stupid. I know we're running out of ideas to discuss, but come on!

    Lol. Ya think?

Heck, maybe Dave would’ve formed the next Beatles if he’d never met Eddie. Discuss.

That's fair, and no offense is taken. I guess it's par for the course, given four years of dead air (sans regular Cody updates).

No clue... I've never really listened to any solo Sammy stuff. The closest I've gotten is Chickenfoot.

A few good songs an album for the most part is about all you can expect unless you are a Sam die hard. It's mainly middle of the road stuff. The highlight always being how strong a singer Sam is, but a lot of the songs on his solo albums simply are not that good.

Pretty sure it would've continued with HSAS or even Steve Perry's replacement perhaps?

If not he would've more than likely follow through with his solo career,at least until Satriani and Hagar started an alternate version of CF.

Would Sammy as a solo artist have produced harder hitting material than what Van Hagar produced?

You guys have probably done this a millions times, but here's my rankings:

    1) Original VH
    .
    . big gap
    .
    2) Sammy Solo
    .
    . big gap
    .
    3) Dave Solo
    4) Van Halen IV
    5) Van Hagar
    6) Extreme
    7) Chickenfoot
    8) Van Halen III

So, yes, I do like Sammy better as a solo artist. He had a great run of stuff before 1986.

I wonder which combo more people on this site would prefer to have in Van Halen:

    Dave/Wolf or Sammy/Mike?

I prefer Dave over Sammy (because of the material, not vocal ability) and Mike over Wolf (for vocal and playing ability, stage presence and the fact that he belongs in the band).

Will we finally see Mike back in VH in 2020?

    No Dave/Mike option?

I'd prefer whatever band is happenin' I suppose. Beggars can't be choosers, and all.

How about a triple bill tour with the original Van Halen, Journey with Steve Perry and Styx with Dennis DeYoung. Heck, let's add ACDC with Bon Scott while we're dreaming...
