I gained an appreciation of him much later on, when I got more into the six pack. But I thought he was a clown with a sub-par voice. Didnít like the whole schtick. Still donít. LOVE the songs. Loved the songs then. Just not him.

That said, I bought his first two solo albums. I just thought he was the weakest part of the band. I was in heaven when they brought Hagar in.

Then again Hagar isnít perfect by any means. Iíve been critical of his lyrics. He could have done better. Heís intellectually lazy. His highs are really high, his lows really low. Roth led VH is/was way more consistently good. But I still think heís a clown with a sub par voice and not a fan of the whole act.

And by the way my opinion then was 100% based on the records and seeing him on MTV. It had nothing to do with his performances singing live. I donít think I saw or heard a live recording of Roth until probably mid-90ís.

Fair enough. Dave's schtick can definitely be a little much. I just think he and Eddie brought out the best in each other between 1978 and 1984. Two completely opposite personalities who somehow meshed almost perfectly musically.

I think Sammy and Eddie brought out the best in each other between 1986-1996.

Theres nothing subpar about Dave's voice on the six pack.

Yes, he doesnt have a voice for power ballads. THANK GOD FOR THAT. Those singers are a dime a dozen, especially in the 80s.

Maybe from 1986-1988. There were almost 37 months between the releases of OU812 and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. IMO, there was a noticeable drop off in song quality from OU812 to For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and Balance. If I had to come up with my 10 least favorite Sammy era songs, I bet at least 8 of them would be from F.U.C.K. and Balance. Just my $.02.

If I needed meds, I would have actually listed my 10 least favorite Sammy era songs. Don't tempt me.

For me Roth was the weakest link because til this day I really don’t care for his voice.

And his “I’m better than God” routine was a total turnoff.

But it really came down to the voice. And by the time I was a fan Roth was probably the biggest schmuck in rock. Crazy From The Heat/Dave TV/Spandex and thongs etc.

    Didn’t like it.

Still don’t. But I can appreciate his originality and his performances on album.

I liked the image better with Sammy. Seemed more like a band than a band with a frontman.

What? A flamboyant figure that added too much to Rock'n'Roll was better than God?

That can't be, man. It's like you're saying you agree with that 'I don't respect Dave's Artistry' thing.

It was all image after all. Dave or Hagar ftm.

For me, Hagar had the big voice, but just never looked cool up there.

Dave was probably the greatest front man in rock, easily the most physical.
Watch those '79 & '81 Kirshner live promo vids, the guy was bigger than life.

Plus, he was funny and just had loads of charisma.

An operation as big as VH was, even then, needs a big personality out front.
I don't get people knocking Roth for being what he was supposed to be: The Frontman, selling
    the whole VH spectacle.

There's NO possible way this thread could turn into a Sam vs. Dave argument, right?
