I think HFT would translate better to a newbie, as well.

"I'm the one" is GRADE A, no question, but it's pretty much on 10, from the get go.

HFT has the fun bits, the heavy bits, the relatable chorus.

As for FW, i do think Unchained IS one of the best songs on the album.
It's a GREAT tune, we've just heard it so many times.
You gotta go back & remember the first few times.
I LOVED THAT SONG HARD back in '81.

I think Unchained, Mean Street & HAIL, al tie for the best tune.
Sinners, Dirty & So this is love? are next in line and awesome.
The reason HFT works over all else, even diehard faves like HAIL or IASR or EWS or ITO, is because it's more ACCESSIBLE. It showcases each band member accordingly, successively, the harmonies are on point from every corner of the four piece. It's got Al's intro, Ed's solo, Mike's boom and backing vox, and Dave at the very apex of Being Dave, scatting and wisecracking as only Dave can do. Ed is wailing throughout, some of his very best rhythm work. The outro slam dunk end is second to little, one of their best, maybe their best.

Mean Street is a contender, but it's a bit dark for First Contact Van Halen.
HAIL is as well, but it doesn't showcase the band's unparalleled speed between harmonies. It's 'too' epic for a first run virgin VH (alien) ear.
EWS is a solid vote, but non-diehard fans might find the drum intro/jungle motif too out there.
ITO another solid vote, but the barbersharp quartet interval, while super bitchin' to us, might confuse an alien hard rock newbie.
IASR is a very close contender, and while I'd like to play them my fave VH track of all time, it's also 'too epic' for virgin VH newbs.
OF might scare alien virgin ears off...Dave's screams, his best of the entire catalogue, might be too daunting for first listen listeners.

The true blue hook is HFT. It's fun. It's kitchy. It rips. It's a party hearty track. The boys are cookin' all throughout. Best video, that's a given. It has it all, and no segue experimental distractions or singular showcases. It's the Team Effort.

HFT for the galactic iTunes library fo sho.

What is THE ONE VH song that exemplifies VH Definitively?

That's tough, a real hard job to choose.

I've been listening to FW a lot these last days, so I'd go with Unchained.

The point is that if I get VHII, then it would be Light Up the Sky or Bottoms Up!.
Or if I get W&CF, then it would be something different; maybe Cradle or IASR.
What I'm saying is that it depends on the album, the day, the mood, the weather.

Van Halen kicks and that's for sure. My favourite band since 1983 and it ain't gonna change.

One thing lacking from HFT are exemplary lyrics. While lusting for your teacher is definitely a good Van Halen theme, it's just a goofy song lyrically.

Not all songs need it but ITO explains the band's personality, which makes it exemplary on a lyrical level too. There's an edge underneath the fun, which is CVH. We're having so much fun we'll do a barbershop breakdown but just remember we don't give a shit if you are aggravated by it. Because at the end of the night you're going to want to fuck us.

HFT & I'm the one, both have cool lyrics.

I've always like the visuals (Little girl from Cherry Lane/Lawn....Maybe i should go to hell,
    but i am doing well...)

What are you talking about? HFT has near perfect lyrics for Van Halen.

Little girl from Cherry Lane, how did you get so bold?

Babada, shooby doo wa ----> exemplifies goofy.

If you think HFT lyrics are better than ITO based on the transcription of the barbershop breakdown, I don't know what to say.

Personally I couldnít give less of a fuck about VH lyrics.

Itís the vocal harmonies that matter most.

Both HFT and ITO have those.

Both songs have clever, funny lyrics, as is typical of Dave's writing. I dont think you can go wrong with either tune as a showcase for unsuspecting aliens being exposed to the Mighty Van Halen. I think you're splitting hairs at this point.

If you combine I'm The One with Hot For Teacher and add awful lyrics you get Source Of Infection.

For the record, I dig SOI and couldn't care less about the lyrics.
