    Default Kramer 5150 Colors

    Hey boys,

So like 15 years ago I built a 5150 replica. It was the first replica I did and it was OK. At the time, Mitchel at Meanstreet Guitarsí specs were a little off, so I never really loved the guitar, although the paint job was solid. The headstock shape was just too big and it never looked right. He has since fixed all that, this was like his first run. Anyway I finally sold it a couple years ago and figured I would just build a new one with more accurate specs one day.

Fast forward to today. Iíve got my body and neck from KNE Guitars and I usually just use Rustoleum and have no issues. But I think Iíd like to get a little more accurate with my colors for this one so what do you guys suggest. Duplicolor? Something else? What are the names of the colors?

    Gracias.

If you're thinking about using nitro, their stuff works better than automotive lacquer like Duplicolor.

Stew Mac nitro is good, too.

    I remember Mean Street guitars.

    Are they still around?

They had the Unchained & the Intruder, plus the '78 tribute.
    Prices kept going up, though.

With the EVH brand, i can't imagine there's still a market for a Mean Street
    Guitars.

For some reason, this color keeps popping up in my memory:

    Duplicolor Super Red II

FYI...if youíre used to spraying rust-oleum or krylon this will be different. A lot thinner so spray light coats or youíll have a lot of drips.

Hey Brett!! For the 5150 you'll need two different types of duplicolor. First lacquer, you will need Wimbledon White, then Engine Enamel Orange - Red (or Red - Orange) then after this you need to use only Enamels. Black Duplicolor Enamel. That should do it!

    To elaborate on what Mr Bond mentioned;

As a general rule, you can put enamels on top of lacquers, or other enamels, but not lacquers on top of enamels.
Enamels cure by evaporation and oxidation (absorb oxygen), whereas lacquers cure just by evaporation.
Why behave in public...if you're livin' on a playground !

Good to know!! Thanks. This will be my first time using Duplicolor yep. I think all my other guitars are either Krylon or Rustoleum.

Dude lots of guys still like doing their own stuff. Like me. . I could go out and get one of those Fender 5150s but Iíd rather build my own. Plus I donít like that the headstock is the wrong shape.

Yep MS Guitars is still around and his models are much more precise than they used to be. He does very nice custom stuff and paint jobs. They have gotten more expensive too. I think I paid like $350 for my guitar. Again this was almost 15 years ago now. I think mine was yellow and I just sanded off the clearcoat and painted right over it.

Iíve been using Mitch at KNE the last 10 years for all my necks and bodies. He does awesome work and he is local for me, so I just drive to his house to pick stuff up. My Rasta, Bee, Circles are all KNE. And I have a KNE neck on my Dave Murrayish Super Strat mutt.

Oh guys another question since Iím thinking about painting this thing.

What is the best way to get some of the overspray look on the black stripes? When I do them I always do them clean, but Iíd like to try to do them with the overspray that Ed really had.

    Thanks!

Yeah his guitars are like $1500-$1700 now. That's off the charts in my opinion. I'm sure they are great guitars, but you'd have to buy it to keep forever because you wouldn't even get 50% back if you ever resold.

Wasn't sure if you guys saw this from NAMM:

    https://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-CHA-2966835-503

Also too pricey in my opinion - but pretty rad none the less. Has an EVH pickup in the bridge and a Lynch demon in the neck. A real Floyd would have been nice for $1500.

Thereís a reason itís popping up in your head! Thatís because thatís been the go-to color for the Frankenstrat for years. Mr. Bond listed the closest colors for the 5150 though.

Brett - what pickup are you going to use? I canít say enough good things about the Pariah Pasadena pickup I put in my Frankenstrat. They make a 5150 style pickup too, comes with the correct tape around and everything.

Not sure yet on the pickup. I have a Wolfgang lying around. I might just use that. I still need to buy a bridge and some tuners so Iím trying to keep the costs reasonable.

Not sure what heís thinking there. Those guitars use to be like $400-$500. Donít get why heís charging three times that now. I guess he doesnít plan on getting a lot of sales.

Heís obviously using a lot better parts but thatís still a crazy price.
