    Yeah...it has the consistency ink!

If you didnít use a sealer, itís going to keep soaking into the body until it builds up enough paint. You might be better off leaving it dry (gasís off) for a few days and start again. Lightly scuff with a grey paint pad or hit it with some 320 or 400 wet dry paper before re-coating.

Lacquer needs a mechanical bond to stick after the re-coating window has passed. Also, light coats when you start again...the lacquer can cause the paint to craze if itís to heavy.

Thanks for all the tips man. Iíve painted a lot of guitars, but Iíve never used lacquer before. The headstock looks really good though. It almost has enough coats. I should have started earlier today.

What did you use for the body - poplar or basswood? I would say that the basswood would absorb more than the poplar but both will eventually start building the paint.

The maple neck will definitely build paint the fastest due to tightness of the grain. Both may soak/absorb the paint over the next few days. Itís weird. Lacquer is a different animal. The auto lacquer that Iíve bought over the years is mixed 50/50 so itís like spraying solvent.

Haha itís been a few years I actually had to look up my email to Mitch at KNE to see what I ordered. Itís poplar. First poplar body Iíve had.

Yeah itís definitely built up paint on the body. Itís getting there.

Go figure...Rust-oleum has their own automotive touch up paint and looking at the MDS sheet, lacquer wasnít listed.

Of course they have red/orange Chevy engine paint, too:

Well Iíve bought my whole town out of Wimbledon White. OíReillys is out of it. I bought the last one at AutoZone and hopefully Pep Boys might have one if I need it. Three cans should be enough. But the body soaked up a lot. I guess I shouldíve used a sealer. Oh well.

All right Iím done with the white. Didnít quite go through three cans. But that was the longest itís ever taken me to put the first color on. The lighting in my garage isnít the greatest. Let it dry tonight and work on the stripes tomorrow.

Well never had this happen before. Put some tape on and it pulled the paint right off in some spots. So Iím going to repaint those couple areas and then let it sit for two or three days before I tape it up again. This paint is just different obviously. Bummer because the paint looks really really good and is really nice and smooth.

Thank sucks! Did it pull off completely (bare wood) or to the layer you started painting on the following day? Lacquer needs (or likes) to have a mechanical bond to the previous layer if it has dried more than the re-coat window. At least that has been my experience. The longer you wait, the better if spraying on top of a "green" layer.
