My 5150 was built by a very esteemed member, and it definitely has a slight hint of orange in the color

It's going to be almost impossible to match the exact color unless you actually have the guitar in front of your own eyes. Depending on what type of lighting the guitar is photographed in, and the settings of monitor you are viewing it on, it will vary.

To get the closest, you would have to get colors that you believe are the closest, spray them all onto a board, and compare them to multiple different pictures of the guitar, online and in print photographs, and select the one that matches the best. Even then, if you put it in a room next to the original, it probably would be an exact match, because paint formulas have changed since he painted his.

I think for most people, pretty close is close enough. I will say that I remember seeing pictures of the 5150 where it almost appeared orange instead of red, and in other pictures, it looked more red than orange, but there always seemed to be blood orange tint to the color.

I donít think there is any doubt that the Gerulaitis Kramer has an orange hue to it. It looks like itís glowing! Also, Iím guessing itís painted with the same shade?

Yeah unfortunately that must be the case because I know those paints are available on Amazon.

    Default Kramer 5150 Colors

So I went and bought the Dupli-color paints today. Man that stuff is a lot more expensive than Rustoleum. I hope that one 8 ounce can of the white will be enough. That was $11 by itself.

Iím going to try to get the neck and body painted white this weekend, and start taping Sunday night. Iím really in no hurry, so just going to take my time through this whole thing. The guitar has been sitting in my closet for a couple years, so as you can see Iím not exactly doing this with a sense of urgency.

So what is the consensus on the best 5150 stickers now? Mitch from KNE gave me a 5150 sticker, but itís not right I donít want to use it.

What about tuners? I know the originals were non-logoed 90 degree Gotohs. What are most of you guys using now?

I still need to get a bridge too and havenít decided what route Iím going to go on that yet. I thought the pickup I had lying around was a Wolfgang, but actually itís an EVH Frankenstein which I like a lot better anyway.

Gotoh SG360 tuners are like $36 for a set of 6 on eBay. I use them on all my builds and Iím pretty sure theyíre what come stock on all Wolfgangs. Besides the logo and the one double tab tuner I think theyíre close enough for a 5150.

Brett...I thought you would have this done by now! Ha-Ha!

How many more cans of white did you buy? It’s a little thin compared to Krylon and Rust-oleum.

I canít remember exactly but Iím positive I toasted a regular size can of white and then some and that was along with a sealer doing a Franky.

See how far you get with one can...you can always get more if you need it. Have fun!

Ha-Ha! I found a remaining can of super red in the cabinet - Jedi remembered!

I think the reason why I used so much white was because I wanted to flatten some of the peel and I knew that the paint would be thin. I purposely sprayed it heavy to avoid the black making it look grayish. Of course yours will be different with white being your base.

How many minutes do you guys wait between coats when using Dupli-color? When I use Rustoleum I usually wait about 15 minutes between coats.

If you bought the import Auto Spray paint you should follow the ďtackyĒ guide listed on the can. Use a piece of scrap or the pocket/control cavity to touch and feel for tacky. Itíll be less in the beginning (5-10 minutes) with your mist coats but as the paint builds up, itíll get longer (10-15 minutes) between coats. Needless to say but the hotter it is, less time between coats. Just remember to keep shaking the can and use light coats instead of heavy. And most importantly use plenty of ventilation...the vapors are harsh!

Man this paint goes on so much slower than using Rustoleum. Itís so much thinner. But it does look really good. Already went through one can the body is just eating the paint. Wimbledon White is cool itís like an aged-looking white I can definitely see why you guys said to use that one. I might not actually be able to finish all the white tonight. Itís getting late and Iím getting tired. .
