    Ahhh...ok. Sorry Brett!

Did Ed use Bicycle paint for the 5150? Something like flamboyant red or sunset orange?

Itís weird because I can definitely see an orangish hue in some pics and more red in others? Speaking of which, the new EVH 5150 seems like itís straight red...no hint of an orangish hue. Wonder why they chose that shade if the original was leaning towards the orange spectrum?

I think Sunset Orange is another widely accepted color, but it's harder to come by.

And it's been reported from former Kramer employees like Paul Unkert and George Felise that Ed didn't build or paint the 5150 himself. However, I have a theory. They may have painted it red and white, but Ed added the black once he got it. Hence the reverse masking and general the slop compared to the near perfect white stripes everywhere else.

Edit: Was just talking to a buddy and he remembers George mentioning that they also did some reverse masking by cutting slots in manilla envelopes. Contributes to the overspray we see on the 5150, but I still think Ed may have done that initially on the 5150.

Correct. Paul told me the same thing when I was hanging out in his Shop several years back... Though he always said he doesn't exactly remember all the details of all the VH stuff cuz it was so long ago. He did seem to be adamant that he created the neck profile. He also told me that he was the one that initially gave PRS the idea of using a 25" scale.

Just what I was told, I can not confirm/deny any info he gave me...

If the employees painted the guitar, I doubt they used bicycle paint.

The orangish hue seems to be a mystery to me. Looking through this gallery, itís looks red:

Also too pricey in my opinion - but pretty rad none the less. Has an EVH pickup in the bridge and a Lynch demon in the neck. A real Floyd would have been nice for $1500.

    Whoah, he went way up.

You could get a base guitar for just over 400.00, then it was 500.00, then 550.00

And, yeah, you'd get screwed on the re-sale value.

Friend of mine bought one of those and the tremolo was actually resting inside the tremolo cutout. Ha-Ha!

Apologies if this is out of place but would anyone happen to know where to get the colors mentioned above in Europe?
Alternatively, any experience with ordering from a US-based supplier?

Been looking for quite some time and getting nowhere.

FYI...if youíre used to spraying rust-oleum or krylon this will be different. A lot thinner so spray light coats or youíll have a lot of drips.
If I'm not mistaken, Super Red II was the color on the Frankenstein, rather than 5150. I used that on my Frankie & it looks right. 5150 is more of a red-orange color. I'm sure the experts can confirm or not.

    Hi Brett

I used Schwinn formula sunset orange Koolest Kolors spray paint from Koolestuff on ebay. I also used Cotton White Koolest Kolors. Unfortunately it's 4x more expensive than dupli-color. If you go that route it takes a few more days to harden vs dupli-color. Be careful taking the tape off and leave it for a week or more to set up and harden. You could accidentally indent the paint. This is my favorite guitar of all time so I'm going to give it another go soon and try to make another one to see if I can get closer to how it really looked. Mr Bond's all out 5150 really encouraged me to try and do better.

I forgot to achieve the overspray look you can tent the tape in the shape of the overspray just above the guitar and the over spray will go into that area. Like on the horns you have a lower clean line but at the top of the line have the tape arc over the edge of where the line would be. Same with the side of the guitar with the big overspray blotch and even the black line that crosses the numbers has a little wonky shape starting at the second 5 through the 0.

    Yeah, Jedi set me straight!

Still, to me, I don't see the difference in the red hue that makes the 5150 look orange. It looks like flattened red paint. If fact it looks real close to the Frankenstrat in these studio photos:

    Default Kramer 5150 Colors

Yeah the 5150 is definitely more orange. The Frank is a much deeper red.

The red is also sanded or worn flat (without gloss) with a solid white base underneath which would make it lighter. Iím not disputing that the two guitars are different shades of red. Iím just wondering if the guitar started out dark red and through wear and tear or relicing appears to be orangish red? It could explain why some of the pics look red and some look orangish.

    Either way it looks good!
