OCD is basically an anxiety disorder so it makes sense that anxious people would develop it and anxiety and sleep don't mix. The favorite one of mine when I'm going to bed is when the thought pops into my mind of "what happens when we die?" and then were off on the fucking rat wheel for a couple hours thinking about all the scenarios. LOL, now that I typed that it'll probably happen tonight.

You should download some books about overcoming OCD and anxiety on Amazon. Two techniques that I found really helpful are mindfulness and Acceptance and commitment therapy or ACT.

A perfect example of using ACT to overcome insomnia would be to accept the anxiety that comes with not being able to fall asleep. It sounds counterintuitive, but accepting things as they are instead of fighting with how you want them to be can be very liberating because you will calm your mind.

I used to get stuck in the vicious cycle of not falling asleep right away and then worrying about the fact that I was going to be tired the next day, so the more I worried about it and fought it, the harder it got to fall asleep until next thing you know the alarm is going off and you haven't slept for shit. Now, if this occurs I just accept that I'm having difficulty falling asleep, I accept that if it continues I'm going to be tired the next day but I can get through it, and I stop worrying about it and just accept things for the way they are. I usually fall asleep in time to get a decent night's sleep when I do this as opposed to being up all night.

You could also use ACT to accept where you're at in life - instead of thinking you've failed in life, come at it from a different perspective. While your life may not be how you want it, you can learn to accept it for what it is in a non judgmental fashion and then free yourself to approach the remainder of it by living in the present as opposed to worrying about the future or the past.

I'm certainly no expert, but these two small techniques have really helped me climb out of a deep hole I was in about a year and a half ago, so seek out some more information about these techniques from professionals where you can learn to implement them in your life.
Wow, i've never heard of ACT before.

It sounds like a really interesting approach to the problem.

Yeah, OCD has been with me since i was a child, and my sister asked why i lined
up toys in a certain formation, or sometimes touched the 'fridge door twice, before closing.
I was like seven, and just said: I don't know, i just have to.

I call my OCD, Lazy man's OCD, because i'm not gonna be the guy to go back out and retrace
my steps three times, or avoid sidewalk cracks.

But, yeah, there are certain rituals, lots of number patterns.
It's a weird thing, and i'm definitely anxiety prone.

If i get a cold, and one side get's blocked up, my entire focus (while lying in bed)
goes to: OMG, i'm blocked, i can't breathe (panic creeps in).

It's so ridiculous, and i talk myself down, but my brain seems to forever be on high alert.

But, thank you, for the great post & methods you use.

My poor brother had to get his first colonoscopy, when he turned 40.

    Turns out he had hemorhoids.

He was like, i had no idea, what was going on up there, thought it was tumors.

You'd think the doctor would have figured it out, before making him do all that.

Get a colonoscopy, it's a short, but great sleep.

The camera is tiny, but the tripod.......

Seriously, insomnia a complete bastard of a thing to be going through. I got it when I gave up regularly smoking weed many years ago, then again when I was diagnosed with PTSD after seeing a fellow rider killed in front of me in a motorcycle crash. I occasionally have bouts of it now, but I usually get them under control quickly and rarely go through extended periods of insomnia anymore.

Meds can help to get you back on track, but long term they suck. I'm not an addictive person, so i'll try anything to see if it works.

Seriously dude, don't worry about turning 50. It is just another day.

A few things i've done over the years to improve my sleep patterns:

No visible clock in the bedroom to keep looking at and thinking 'fuck, it's 3:30am!"
I haven't set an alarm for years
    No screen time after 8:30pm
    Regulate booze intake on weekdays
    Wear soft ear plugs
    Black curtains in the bedroom
A big bed, so the missus can't punch me in the face in her sleep

I tried lots of different thinking exercises but found the best for me is to continually say to myself "There is no reason for me to be awake now" . Or if it's a stressful work or personal issue that's keeping me awake, I think "There's nothing I can do about this right now".

I think the first one, would just piss my body off more! LOL.
The second one is pretty good.

The key is to manage the negative or frustrating thoughts, to turn the "Fuck, i can't sleep"
into, "You'll eventually get to sleep."

Ideally, just focus on nothing & keep it clear, as 47 said.

This week, i've started to dread the sound of birds singing, because i know it
signifies dawn coming, and i'm past a certain point.

I don't even need to look at the clock.

The damn birds mocking from afar, is enough. LOL!
