Legal, yes. But your clearance can still be revoked. Certain regulations still state no cannabis or cannabis derived products, for any reason.

Never experienced anything like this. I've had nights where I couldn't sleep but not several in a row....or a month!
Hope something works for ya, Jape.

I was experiencing some bad insomnia about a month and a half ago. Been taking a puff off a joint after dinner and I'm cured.
    That's not for everyone though.

CBD is a good option, as mentioned. There's no THC in CBD (and most CBD is extracted from hemp which doesn't contain THC anyhow), and I don't think drug tests test for CBD.

I know insomnia's a vicious cycle. You'll break out of it, Japeape. I hope you find what works for you soon.

Yep. I've been there and you just have to ride it out. Substances will help to alleviate the acute problem, but acceptance and a new way of thinking are the cure.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Be careful with potshot secondhand advice from folks who know little to nothing of biochemistry, neuroscience nor long term cardiac effects of sleep deprivation. Simplistic platitudes of 'choices' or perception aren't often an option for a great many people, particularly those with synaptic malfunctions, REM sleep disorders, or biochemical imbalances, or sleep deprivation brought on by mood disorders, PTSD, or any significant emotional trauma.

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with insomnia.

Quick question...do you experience mood swings? Long story short, my aunt was diagnosed bi-polar after years of suffering from insomnia. Her manic episodes weren’t severe but her anxiety would keep her up through the night. I remember listening to my parents talking about how she would call at 3:00-4:00 in the morning with home improvement questions. Even her “low” periods were just feeling depressed but functional.

No, i'm super laid back all the time.
At work, i just kinda roll with everything, and rarely lose control of my emotions.

I suffered bad panic attacks over ten years ago, but those faded.
I have mild OCD, which is worse when i'm worried (so now, it's gotten somewhat elevated).
I've never felt depressed (until now, and i see how scary depression can be), but anxious
    quite a bit.

Don't smoke or drink, no meds i'm on.

The only thing i can think is i started a coffee/caffeine addiction very late in life.
I needed it every day, or thought i did.
Plus, i'd drink lots of cokes in between.
But even with that, i could still crash at the end of the day.

The other thing is i'm turning 48 soon, and really stressed about the big 5.0,
and just getting older in general.
I sometimes get fixated on what lurks around the corner, because it's gonna be all
    downhill sooner than later.

I never married, have a GF (who sleeps like a log, btw), no children, so there's no
real safety net as i age.
I won't have kids to take care of me (see how my mind just jumps ahead, instead of
    focusing on the right now).

To be honest, i kind of failed at life, in a way.
Was never very ambitious, though i always worked.
    It is what it is.

My goal is to take classes or try something new, maybe my sleep issues come from
    this mental stagnation.

Speaking of Bi-Polar, my brother in law, a great dude, has always had it.

He was a pretty severe drug addict, mostly coke, and remains an alcoholic.
He has a temper, yet was never violent towards my sister or their two kids.
But he's had freak outs on airplanes, etc.

A few years back, he stopped all drugs & alcohol, but continued smoking.
Now, he's three months into quitting that.

My sister said his doctor ordered a colonoscpy, because he had turned 52.
He wouldn't have bothered, but i guess you gotta get one.

My sister said he is so afraid of falling off the wagon with narcotics of any kind,
he refused whatever they give you before the procedure.

Now, he's a tough guy, but i cannot imagine anyone going through that, or
    the doctor even allowing that.

My sister said he looked like he got run over by a truck, when she picked him up.
All he said was: Just take me home.

Colonoscopies are so overblown. They’re really not that big a deal. They’re just humbling lol.

    How are they overblown?

Like you I have mild to moderate OCD. It ebbs and flows and when its in its higher states sleeping becomes difficult for me.

OCD is basically an anxiety disorder so it makes sense that anxious people would develop it and anxiety and sleep don't mix. The favorite one of mine when I'm going to bed is when the thought pops into my mind of "what happens when we die?" and then were off on the fucking rat wheel for a couple hours thinking about all the scenarios. LOL, now that I typed that it'll probably happen tonight.

You should download some books about overcoming OCD and anxiety on Amazon. Two techniques that I found really helpful are mindfulness and Acceptance and commitment therapy or ACT.

A perfect example of using ACT to overcome insomnia would be to accept the anxiety that comes with not being able to fall asleep. It sounds counterintuitive, but accepting things as they are instead of fighting with how you want them to be can be very liberating because you will calm your mind.

I used to get stuck in the vicious cycle of not falling asleep right away and then worrying about the fact that I was going to be tired the next day, so the more I worried about it and fought it, the harder it got to fall asleep until next thing you know the alarm is going off and you haven't slept for shit. Now, if this occurs I just accept that I'm having difficulty falling asleep, I accept that if it continues I'm going to be tired the next day but I can get through it, and I stop worrying about it and just accept things for the way they are. I usually fall asleep in time to get a decent night's sleep when I do this as opposed to being up all night.

You could also use ACT to accept where you're at in life - instead of thinking you've failed in life, come at it from a different perspective. While your life may not be how you want it, you can learn to accept it for what it is in a non judgmental fashion and then free yourself to approach the remainder of it by living in the present as opposed to worrying about the future or the past.

I'm certainly no expert, but these two small techniques have really helped me climb out of a deep hole I was in about a year and a half ago, so seek out some more information about these techniques from professionals where you can learn to implement them in your life.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I don't think he is saying they aren't important, that getting them is not as big as deal as some make it out to be.

They are a pain in the ass (huh huh), but the prep is worse than the actual procedure. My brother got stage 4 colon cancer when I was 35, so because of that I've been having them for a while.
