Default 1984/5150 still rock the masses

I was catering a big event on Sunday and was cranking 1984.

Every single person that came to me for food was singing along or commenting on how great music used to be etc.

Being that my tastes lean Hagar era 1984 has always been my fave of the 6 pack as it really is the start of that “new” VH sound that I love.

After 1984 I decided to crank 5150 and the same story.

Everyone commented on it or was singing the hits.

Not one person mentioned the lead singer change that we beat to death here. Casual fans just don’t care.

    Maybe we shouldn’t either.

    Anyways cool story I know.

    Or even know about it.

The casual fan thinks it's the same guy and he just got a perm.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

While it's true that only the diehards really care about it, I have been asked several times over the years "Dave or Sam?" when I mention to someone that Van Halen is my favorite band. It is simply a part of pop culture.

Yes, 1984 and 5150 both rock.

Nah, nobody really draws the singer distinction anymore, except at live shows.

    Nobody cares. Except us.

Every diehard here always has a story how they played or heard some VH album somewhere and everyone loved it of course. Or a pocket of buddies who take Sam vs Dave sides lol. Whereas reality seems to reflect differently. I hear VH on satellite radio, and occasionally in some casino, restaurant, or department store elevator muzak playlist loop. And that’s it. None of my gatherings play “oldies.” It’s always hip hop or current zeitgeist music like K-Pop or Jack Johnson or Ariana Grande or something like that.

Man, when Zep and AC/DC becomes elevator music, you know our time is done.

K-Earth 101 (known for playing oldies) started playing 80s songs several years ago.

We're less than 6 months away from being over 30 years removed from the 80s.

I agree there's a segment pop culture that feeds into it. Look at the cop line "Airheads," the line in "Joe Dirt" and well as the breaking up tease in "The Wedding Singer." Also looks at songs like Bowling for Soup's "1985 and Nerf Herder's "Van Halen" release.

LOL. Yeah, all those instances are clear signs that VH is in the main zeitgeist of forefront pop culture.

I've only been asked "Sam or Dave?" once in my life, in the parking lot before the Sam and Dave Tour in 2002.

If he had asked me after the show, I would have said "neither...where's Gary?"
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!
