I really wonder if he plays up the enmity for effect and mystique. Not that there isn't basis in reality, mind you, but it felt a little contrived in this interview (to me). I'm reminded of that bit from the 2013 Buzzfeed interview:

"This lack of warm fuzzies isn't scandalous, there's no friction, it's not fodder for whatever would now pass for a rock gossip mill... The most shocking secret about Van Halen in 2013 is that they're not volatile or liable to collapse from the weight of interpersonal strife. The machine is built to sustain that — and in fact is fueled by the suspicion that this may not be the case."

I don't doubt they aren't close at all, but I have a hard time believing they still fight like he's making out. I bet they communicate more than they let on...
"There will always be a Holyfield or a Tyson, but there's only one Mohammad Ali. There will always be a new body building champion, but there's only one Arnold. And there's only one David Lee. I'm the fun in Van Halen, always will be." - David Lee Roth

He still loses me with this attempt to reposition Van Halen as an experiment in polyethnic world dance music. The nonsense about playing mariachi and salsa music to lowriders. C'mon, Dave, gimme a break! Fegget about it!

At one point they start talking about Art Blakey, Arty Shaw, one of those old jazz guys. It makes me feel so suburban and middle class. My musical world has mostly been between classic rock radio, MTV and the pages of Rolling Stone. I just recently bought a few CD's of music from the '40's, and man, I LOVE '40's music! There was music with tons of swing and attitude being made before Elvis and the Beatles ever came along that we barely hear about now. Makes me wish I'd been more open minded. Maybe I should be checking out Louis Prima. James Brown was a Louis Prima fan, too.
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers are a fav of mine. He was damn good drummer. Always liked Arty Shaw's bands, too.

"Can you sit down with the fellas and have dinner and stuff?"

"Nope. Nope. Not even close," Roth replied. "This is not a golf club. This is a little closer to The Wild Bunch, right?

There is a fury and an antagonism and what comes out of that, when it's good, oh man, that's retina-bursting. That'll change your fucking haircut."

And that's what made their music dangerous and classic.

Always liked the "Hey man, that's a WOW" explanation to the creative process of Dave & Ed.

    "The Wild Bunch"

Perfect analogy by Dave. The Wild Bunch is Right.

"He has a swaggering retro machismo that will give hives to the Steinem cabal" -Camille Paglia on Donald Trump

"But, fucking with Brook is like fucking with hot shit on and ax handle. You just don't get a grip"-track5

"Make way for the bad guy"- Tony Montana

'This hamburger don't need no helper"- David Lee Roth

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango

"But being number one doesn’t really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen

Dave goes off the rails at times, but it's comments like these that reminds me there is no one else quite like him.

That is some classic shit right there!

My GF, of all people, listened to this (she's obsessed with podcasts), and asked me:
Do you like David Lee Roth, or just the band?

I haven't even heard the podcast, but she said: That guy is so freakin' smart, and funny.
He never let's anyone else get in a word, but i couldn't stop listening to him talk about all
the things he was talking about.

I was kinda shocked to hear her, an outsider, not a lifelong fan like me, give her positive
    opinion on current Roth monologues.

Maybe we are underestimating him today, out of band frustration.

It did make their music fantastic. Problem is, when ppl get older, the antagonism often become grumpiness and doesn't produce anything. Now we have more of a "I'll take my ball and go home" type of dynamic.

With all the interviews and podcasts he’s been doing lately I think one area he has improved in is that he has dialed laughing at his own jokes way back. That makes a huge difference

Yes. Reading a transcript of Dave is often better than listening to him tell the story.

I don't think so, Jape. When he's interviewed by someone it's totally different. There's a structure he's responding too. These can be enjoyable.
It's the "Dave show" stuff, where he rambles a mile a minute about million different things at once....that's not enjoyable.

Not all the interviews are equal though. I've seen/heard plenty where Dave just ignores the interviewee and does a monologue. In most cases, those feel like Dave is doing semi-prepared bits.

Maron is very gifted at the art of conversation, and he actually gets Dave to have one...or at least as close as he can get to it. It's mostly Dave talking, but Maron interjects just enough to keep Dave on track. I definitely learned more about what makes Dave tick than all the previous interviews I've heard combined.
