    What happened?

He never took care of his voice. Singers don’t smoke for 50 years non-stop. Not if you actually care about your voice.

Dave got by on average voice with a larger than life persona. Now he has neither.

Now get all mad at me for saying so.

I disagree that Dave has/had an average voice, though by all accounts he had to work hard to develop it. Love him or hate him, you can always tell it’s him.

I do agree with you that he has not taken care of his voice. Smoking is a terrible habit, and for a singer, it’s just downright stupid. He should have quit years ago - or never started. It’s amazing to me that some people, who are so driven and strong and disciplined in other areas of life, somehow get hooked on those damn things and just can’t quit.

Cigarettes might be fine when you’re a younger singer as Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury Both smoked back in the day.

But you can’t be smoking a pack a day at 65.

I’m not dissing Dave by saying his singing voice is average. It wasn’t his voice that made him unique though. He was fantastic in the early days though. He’s incredible on VH2 (his best work imo).

That was 40 years and 5,000,000 cigarettes ago.

Cigarettes and cocaine are poor choices for everyone, not just lead singers.

Dave was still 'auditioning' for the VH bros in '07. It was so long awaited, he had a point to prove.

After that he had the gig, so he relaxed.

That brings us to the present day.

His voice DID make him unique.

Even when i was a little kid, the first time hearing "Cradle" on the radio, NO ONE
was singing like him or doing those tarzan yelps.

I remember thinking: This guy sounds so cool!

And his delivery & lyrics could be conversational, which was unique, and he had a very
    cool tone to his voice.

He's flat out incredible on II & WACF, but i love everything he did on the mighty six.

David Lee Roth was a great rock singer with a unique sounding voice. To say otherwise is just ridiculous. His personality was a whole other layer that added to his uniqueness. His influences went beyond rock music too. That is part of the reason you sometimes have to dig hard when you try to determine where he’s coming from.

He had no “average” voice whatsoever. That’s just more bs from detractors or people who don’t really listen or appreciate rock ‘n’ roll.
