It's an opportunity for him to speak out and be Dave. As we all know, he is an extrovert and a motor-mouth. He simply wants to share his thoughts with the world while waiting for any Van Halen-related activity.
I think there's an unaware sense of humor about this "speak about everything and it don't lead to anything"-thing. It becomes kind of enjoyable, although in a small amount.
Sam & Dave are equally as good.

    Roth is completely fried.

I watched 10 seconds and had to turn it off.

As far as VH news my guess is Roth knows about as much as we do.

You made it 10 seconds more than I even tried to.
I can't believe I used to like his interview/talking banter, which now is a major turn off for me.

Oh, and that doesn't diminish stuff he did '78-'84 on the albums, yet those are the ONLY places I want to see or hear him today.

Like an idiot, I confess that I set my personal web browser's homepage to DLR's site, knowing that I would not check the site for any other reason - wanting to get the latest in Van Halen news - amidst the promise of new Van Halen music.

    What's up with this guy?

When I was a kid, had you told me that there would come a mass rollout of the internet - along with the ability to hear Roth elucidate on various topics...wow!

I would expect for him to tell us the background behind each of Van Halen's songs; an ongoing discussion of his favorite musical influences, aspirations; what it was like working with Vai, and the detail behind the Skyscraper album cover.

    WTF?

About a month ago, he drops a bombshell of the likelihood of new music - especially after October's stunt, you think he'd have been a little cautious of how he delivers future news.

A couple of shows ago, he talked about saliva. Today, he apparently is going on about "the dancefloor."

What's up with this guy? What sane person would listen to this crap?
He said he was going to meet with the brothers about a week or two ago to discuss their future and you expect something to be announced a few days later? Are you serious?

Best case scenario is that they agreed to do something, and even if they start the next day it will take months before it is done much less announced.

Sit tight and hope for the best, there's absolutely no need to go to his goofy site to hear news that is months away and will likely make it to the (relative) mainstream media a few hours later.

I'm forever amused by Diamond Dave. He's definitely crazier than he was pre-1994 when he was a little more normal (maybe the lack of success YFLM humbled him?), but still think he's the funniest motherfucker in rock 'n' roll. Even when he excessively laughs at his own jokes. I haven't listened to them all yet because there are so many of them and they're so long to boot, but eventually I will.

    Love ya DLR!

I know it's ill-fated to connect VH with any type of publicity "plan" - but is there precedent to Dave's current madness on youtube? It seems (and I know this isn't logic- or data-based) that Dave picking up the frequency on interviews, his youtube channel, etc. sometimes precedes band activity.

As if Ed and Al give him the reluctant green light - along with a huge eye roll - to try to generate early enthusiasm for something they're planning (or might plan) to do?

Hope my analysis makes sense. I probably won't do a PhD thesis on it.

I realize we have to take whatever we can get but for some reason the thing that bugs me most (beyond just lack of hardly any product) is that there's not even really an attempted illusion that they are, or have been for the past 12 years, a "band" in any way. Even at best when they're touring it's basically what all the pop stars do these days; "So and so, featuring so and so". It's Van Halen, who sometimes plays shows with the completely separate entity known as David Lee Roth.

But it still bugs my inner 15 year old to see things like "Go to Davidleeroth.com to get Van Halen news". Why wouldn't we go to VanHalen.com, Dave? Aren't you in the band? I mean, they have separate management, evidently almost no contact with each other, unless I'm missing it there aren't even links to each others' sites, the Van Halen site never makes mention of anything Dave is doing even when it's VH related and Dave wants us to get VH news at his site, and in a dozen years they still haven't created a new song together...

So the whole argument over who the singer is in VH is moot. There hasn't been a singer "in VH" in over 20 years, just sometimes they contract one of the singers that used to be in the band to get on stage with them. That's the reality.

That is indeed the reality. There hasn't even been mutual in-studio collaboration hands on partner to partner since '95, and probably not friendly collaboration since '91.

Someone's a pain in the ass.

What can I say...I am a pretty patient guy, but like everyone else, I miss new music from my favorite band. And, unlike the late 70's-mid 80's, there are no other rock bands to distract me from Van Halen's inactivity.

What are you guys confused about?

    >What's The Point Of The David Lee Roth Show?

The correct direct answer is obviously clear:

    1) He's promoting his new million dollar business, INK.
    2) He's promoting the Jump ReMix of his finest pop record to the next new generation. (royaltieS)
    3) He is keeping his and the VH name alive in the press.
    4) He's keeping his word jazz game on.

That is the answer. Additions welcome.

This is 100% what he has *always* done (with varying success).

    No mystery here.

Pretty much. The more control Eddie got through the years, the less the band did. I pointed that out years and years ago.
It happens to a lot of bands. They get signed when they're young and don't know anything. The label assigns them a manager, and they have deadlines and contracts, so they work.
The manager makes sure they get stuff done when it's supposed to be.

Somewhere along the way, the band gets rich and start bucking and chafing "under the thumb" of the label and "wants more creative freedom".

So they finish their contract and "take a break". Then reconvene, new "lower pressure" contract, and finally they have creative freedom....and the majority of bands then are very slow to put out new material at that point, because they are their own bosses....and creative types typically are kind of flaky, so they don't make good bosses. They are worker bees, and need guidance.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -
