    Default THE BIG TECH THREAD

    Jun 11, 2019, 06:23am

Antitrust Probe Starts Today With Focus On Big Tech's Profits From News

A congressional panel will today kick off its antitrust investigation into Google, Amazon, Apple and Facebook with an examination of the way they affect the news media landscape.

The investigation coincides with the publication of a new report from the News Media Alliance which concludes that Google received an estimated $4.7 billion in revenue last year from crawling and scraping news publishers’ content.

Today's hearing by the House Judiciary antitrust subcommittee, led by Rhode Island Democrat David Cicilline, will examine whether current antitrust laws are effective in preventing anti-competitive behaviour.

"I think we’re going to hear about what the impact has been on the news industry as a result of this huge market dominance," Cicilline says.

This bill will provide a much-needed lifeline to local publishers who have been crushed by Google and Facebook. It’s about time we take a stand on this issue."

Scheduled to testify at the hearing is David Chavern, head of publishers’ campaign group the News Media Alliance. He has pushed hard for the introduction of the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act, currently making its way through the US Congress, which would allow publishers to negotiate collectively with the platforms.

"Journalism is critical to our civic society. The major tech platforms know this and they extract the value from our reporting without adequately compensating the publishers who create it," he says. "News publishers need the ability to band together to negotiate a sustainable future for quality journalism."

According to the News Media Alliance report, in the year to January 2018, traffic from Google Search to news publisher sites rose by more than 25 per cent to approximately 1.6 billion visits per week. The proportion of news in Google search results, it says, ranges from 16 to 40 per cent.

"News publishers need to continue to invest in quality journalism, and they can’t do that if the platforms take what they want without paying for it. Information wants to be free, but reporters need to get paid," says Chavern.

Rather optimistically, perhaps, e-commerce trade association NetChoice is attempting to portray the internet giants as underdogs being bullied by the media.

"Big media is showing its true colors by supporting antitrust exemptions for themselves, while demanding tougher antitrust enforcement on tech businesses," says NetChoice vice president and general counsel Carl Szabo.

"Rather than looking for government to tear down tech businesses, big media should follow tech’s lead and innovate so they are more competitive."

It's not clear how long the investigation will run, nor precisely what will fall within its remit. But it comes at the same time as antitrust inquiries by both the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice. Already, the EU has taken action against Google owner Alphabet, fining it billions for anti-competitive practices.

Tech Insider Blows Whistle on How Pinterest Listed Top Pro-Life Site as Porn, “Bible Verses” Censored

Insider: Search Term “Christian” Won’t Auto-Complete, Others Can’t Trend, No Notifications, or Recommendations

 Pinterest Blacklisted Pro-Life Group LiveAction.org, Classified as “Pornography,” Cannot Link to Site

 Leaked “Sensitive Terms List” Includes “bible verses” and “christian easter”

 Ben Shapiro Commentary Censored in “zero tolerance moment,” Slack Messages Reveal

 Planned Parenthood Undercover Videos Marked as “harmful” Conspiracy

 Veritas Calls On More Silicon Valley Insiders to Come Forward

UPDATE 1: Pinterest REACTS. LiveAction.org is no longer on their “Porn Domain Blacklist”

UPDATE 2: Pinterest REACTS AGAIN. LiveAction’s Pinterest Account has been permanently suspended.

UPDATE 3: A Pinterest spokesperson has provided a statement in response to our request for comment: “Religious content is allowed on Pinterest, and many people use our service to search for and save Pins inspired by their beliefs. To protect our users from being targeted based on personal characteristics such as their religion, we have policies in place so that ads and recommendations don’t appear alongside certain terms.”

(San Francisco) Project Veritas has received and published documents from an insider at Pinterest. The documents, which include product code, Slack messages, and internal policies, reveal terms and websites that Pinterest apparently censors.

See some of the leaked documents (some are redacted):

(San Francisco) Project Veritas has received and published documents from an insider at Pinterest. The documents, which include product code, Slack messages, and internal policies, reveal terms and websites that Pinterest apparently censors.

In an interview, the Pinterest insider who leaked the documents explains how the company censors pro-life and Christian content on the website.

(Do you work in Big Tech? Project Veritas would love to hear from you.)

Said Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe:

“The documents we obtained raise questions about whether or not these tech companies really operate like neutral platforms, as opposed to publishers with editorial agendas.”

Pinterest is a publicly-traded social media company headquartered in San Francisco that has nearly 300 million active monthly users. In the past, Project Veritas released undercover footage of Twitter employees discussing “shadow-banning,” and also published leaked documents from Facebook which revealed plans to target and demote conservative commentary.

“I was pretty surprised,” said the Pinterest insider in an interview, when s/he discovered that pro-life group LiveAction.org was added to a “porn domain block list.” The insider explained that the “block list” was intended to be a collection of pornographic websites that Pinterest uses in order ensure that pornography cannot be posted. LiveAction.org is not a pornographic website, instead it is the web domain of a prominent pro-life advocacy group.

The insider explained that websites on a “domain block list” cannot be linked in posts made by users. While investigating, Project Veritas tried to post the LiveAction.org link on Pinterest and failed to do so, receiving an error message that read, “Sorry! Your request could not be completed.” Project Veritas reviewed the list of websites from the “porn domain block list” and was able to confirm that along with LiveAction.org, websites like zerohedge.com, pjmedia.com, teaparty.org and other various conservative websites were also listed. The majority of the document lists pornographic websites.

Lila Rose, the founder and president of LiveAction claims that her organization has been censored in the past, and believes that pro-life organizations are unfairly targeted by social media companies:

“Pinterest says that their mission is to ‘help empower people to discover things that they love,’ but despite the fact that millions of people love babies and the pro-life cause, they are secretly censoring our life-affirming messages. Pinterest users deserve to know the truth and our messages deserve to be treated fairly.”

“One person can make all the difference”

    Said the insider:

“I think when public policies don’t match with how social media companies are actually implementing them, people have a right to know, people have a right to that transparency. And the thing is one person can make all the difference… one person can bring transparency to big tech.”

Facebook worries emails could show Zuckerberg knew of questionable privacy practices

Facebook Inc. uncovered emails that appear to show Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg’s connection to potentially problematic privacy practices at the company, according to people familiar with the matter.

Within the company, the unearthing of the emails in the process of responding to a continuing federal privacy investigation has raised concerns that they would be harmful to Facebook - at least from a public-relations standpoint - if they were to become public, one of the people said.

The potential impact of the internal emails has been a factor in the tech giant’s desire to reach a speedy settlement of the investigation by the Federal Trade Commission, one of the people said. Facebook is operating under a 2012 consent decree with the agency related to privacy, and the emails sent around that time suggest that Mr. Zuckerberg and other senior executives didn’t make compliance with the FTC order a priority, the people said.

Exclusive: Facebook’s Process to Label You a ‘Hate Agent’ Revealed

    13 Jun 2019

Facebook monitors the offline behavior of its users to determine if they should be categorized as a “Hate Agent,” according to a document provided exclusively to Breitbart News by a source within the social media giant.

The document, titled “Hate Agent Policy Review” outlines a series of “signals” that Facebook uses to determine if someone ought to be categorized as a “hate agent” and banned from the platform.

Those signals include a wide range of on- and off-platform behavior. If you praise the wrong individual, interview them, or appear at events alongside them, Facebook may categorize you as a “hate agent.”

Facebook may also categorize you as a hate agent if you self-identify with or advocate for a “Designated Hateful Ideology,” if you associate with a “Designated Hate Entity” (one of the examples cited by Facebook as a “hate entity” includes Islam critic Tommy Robinson), or if you have “tattoos of hate symbols or hate slogans.” (The document cites no examples of these, but the media and “anti-racism” advocacy groups increasingly label innocuous items as “hate symbols,” including a cartoon frog and the “OK” hand sign.)

Facebook will also categorize you as a hate agent for possession of “hate paraphernalia,” although the document provides no examples of what falls into this category.

The document also says Facebook will categorize you as a hate agent for “statements made in private but later made public.” Of course, Facebook holds vast amounts of information on what you say in public and in private — and as we saw with the Daily Beast doxing story, the platform will publicize private information on their users to assist the media in hitjobs on regular American citizens.

Breitbart News has already covered some of the individuals that Facebook placed on its list of potential “hate agents.” Paul Joseph Watson eventually was categorized as “hateful” and banned from the platform, in part, according to the document, because he praised Tommy Robinson and interviewed him on his YouTube channel. Star conservative pundit Candace Owens and conservative author and terrorism expert Brigitte Gabriel were also on the list, as were British politicians Carl Benjamin and Anne Marie Waters.

The Benjamin addition reveals that Facebook may categorize you as a hate agent merely for speaking neutrally about individuals and organizations that the social network considers hateful. In the document, Facebook tags Benjamin with a “hate agent” signal for “neutral representation of John Kinsman, member of Proud Boys” on October 21 last year.

Facebook also accuses Benjamin, a classical liberal and critic of identity politics, as “representing the ideology of an ethnostate” for a post in which he calls out an actual advocate of an ethnostate.

In addition to the more unorthodox signals that Facebook uses to determine if its users are “hate agents,” there is also, predictably, “hate speech.” Facebook divides hate speech into three tiers depending on severity and considers attacks on a person’s “immigration status” to be hate speech.

Here’s how “hate speech” — both on and off Facebook — will be categorized by the platform, according to the document:

Individual has made public statements, or statements made in private and later made public, using Tier 1, 2, or 3 hate speech or slurs:

3 instances in one statement or appearance = signal
5 instances in multiple statements or appearances over one month = signal

If you’ve done this within the past two years, Facebook will consider it a hate signal.

Other signals used by Facebook to determine if its users should be designated as hate agents include carrying out violence against people based on their “protected or quasi-protected characteristics,” attacks on places of worship, and conviction of genocide.

‘The Left Has Won The Culture Wars. Now They’re Just Driving Around Shooting Survivors’

    06/13/2019

Joe Rogan and entrepreneur Naval Ravikant discussed how the left has been able to win “culture wars” by controlling social media platforms.

Their discussion comes as Big Tech companies such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have made moves to increase censorship of users and platforms that they say are in violation of their respective rules and codes of conduct — many of whom are politically right-leaning.

Some large media companies such as the New York Times and Vox argue for the act of removing users for spreading hate speech because it radicalizes young people.

“One great tweet I saw was, ‘The left won the culture wars. Now they’re just driving around shooting survivors,'” said Ravikant. “This is unfortunate for conservatives but technology is a force that also pushes left.”

Ravikant, a billionaire tech-start-up investor, appeared on Rogan’s podcast to discuss a variety of issues including self-evaluation, tech censorship, environmental movements and cultural shifts. Rogan noted that the left’s take over of social media may be helping them win the culture wars against conservatives.

“I wonder who has won the culture war? There’s certainly a battle that’s been won in terms of control of social media,” said Rogan.

Ravikant claims that all new forms of technology have historically always shifted toward the left because “technology actually empowers the individual. The individual means that you have the breakdown of family structure and religion … but generally, technology leads the world left.”

The pair go on to discuss the dangers of the increasing power of social media giants to control the spread of information and affect the outcome of elections.

“The most powerful people in the world today are the people who are writing the algorithms for Twitter, Facebook and Instagram because they’re controlling the spread of information,” said Ravikant. “They’re literally rewriting people’s brains. They’re programming the culture.”

The billionaire goes on to say that the change will only come when “the politicians realize that these social media platforms are picking the next president, the next congressmen — they’re literally picking — and they have the power to pick, so they will be controlled by the government.”

Rogan follows up with how the government might be able to restrict social media giants and Ravikant predicts that politicians on both the left and right will try to force platforms to suppress their opposition.

Rogan’s discussion concerning censorship comes just days before Pinterest decided to ban conservative pro-life group “Live Action” after Project Veritas revealed the company has been internally censoring bible verses and Christian posts.

In response to the leak, Twitter suspended Project Veritas for, according to The Daily Caller News Foundation, publishing “other people’s private information.” The company received major backlash for their censorship.

During the podcast, Rogan expressed concern over Facebook’s decision to help release the identity of a Trump supporter who shared a parody video of Nancy Pelosi. “What is even more disturbing is that Facebook gave up his information,” said Rogan. “For what? Because he said something funny?”

Rogan and Ravikant’s podcast episode received widely positive feedback with currently over 1.7 million views.

Facebook unveils ‘its most invasive and dangerous form of surveillance yet’ with launch of Libra cryptocurrency

    18 Jun 2019

FACEBOOK is launching cryptocurrency next year that will allow people to move money from their smartphone into a digital "wallet".

The currency is known as Libra, which the social network says it has "no special role" in governing and will manage equally with a group of big companies.

Experts have branded the move a dangerous power grab that marks Facebook's "most invasive" form of surveillance yet.

So far, Facebook has enlisted 28 firms, including Spotify and Uber, who each had to invest a minimum of £8million to be a founding member of the Libra Association, an independent not-for-profit membership organisation.

It wants to attract 100 businesses in time for launch, which it is aiming for the first half of 2020.

Libra is supported by a reserve of the world's best assets and the world's most trusted central banks, who gave the cryptocurrency "general cautious support", according to David Marcus, who started exploring blockchain at Facebook a year ago.

"Libra holds the potential to provide billions of people around the world with access to a more inclusive, more open financial ecosystem," he explained.

The social network is hoping that its collaborative approach can ease volatility concerns of existing blockchains and cryptocurrencies.

Facebook will operate its own digital wallet for people to spend Libra, known as the Calibra Wallet, which will be available in WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and as a standalone app.

Users will be able to send money to each other initially, at low to no cost, the social network said.

Eventually, it intends to open the Calibra Wallet up to additional services, so that people can pay bills, buy goods by scanning a code or accessing public transport.

Account information from Calibra will not be shared with Facebook to improve things like ad targeting, except for "limited cases" where this data may be shared "to keep people safe, comply with the law, and provide basic functionality to the people who use Calibra", the social network added.

Libra is open source, meaning anyone will be able to launch their own digital wallet and include the currency.

"As a Founding Member of the Libra Network, Vodafone will extend its commitment to digital and financial inclusion by supporting the creation of a new global currency and encouraging a

wide range of innovative financial services to be developed through its open-source platform," said Stefano Parisse, group director of product and services at Vodafone Group.

"This has the potential to be truly transformative and will benefit those who have never used, or are struggling to access, financial services around the world."

Not everyone was singing the project's praises.

Phil Chen, Decentralized Chief Officer at HTC, said the move was part of a "dangerous" power grab by Facebook.

"If you’re concerned with Facebook knowing too much or having too much access to your private data or social graph, the GlobalCoin will give Facebook even more direct access to your financial information," he told The Sun. "It’s not just access to the information of your transactions, it’s direct access to your wealth and capital.

If the top-line question about Facebook and antitrust is about whether to break it up and spin off the likes of WhatsApp and Instagram – well this global coin is the most invasive and dangerous form of surveillance they have devised thus far. This will easily become the most dangerous antitrust case in history.

If this is launched and adopted worldwide, we’re bound to see Facebook as the top 10 biggest companies for the next 100 years that have complete ownership of the customer and their data from their social graph to every transaction recorded through Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.

This project is the antithesis of bitcoin and is another step towards total control of data and users."

    What is a cryptocurrency?

Bitcoin got you baffled? Here's what you really need to know
A cryptocurrency is a virtual currency
Examples include Bitcoin and the new Facebook-led coin "Libra"
It's traded between people without the help of a bank
Every transaction is recorded in a public ledger, or 'blockchain'
Crypto cash is created by mining
Mining involves solving difficult maths problems using computer processors
Coins can be traded anonymously, which makes them a popular way of funding illegal activities
A single Bitcoin is worth over £7,000 today, but the value fluctuates wildly

Project Veritas – Google Exec Decries Trump’s Election: ‘How Do We Prevent It from Happening Again’

    24 Jun 2019

Undercover videos recorded by Project Veritas reveals that Google is determined to prevent the re-election of Donald Trump in 2020, and is altering its products with this aim in mind.
The report includes undercover footage featuring a top Google executive, Jen Gennai, discussing how Google might prevent an electoral outcome like 2016 from happening again.

Here’s what Gennai says in the undercover video:

We all got screwed over in 2016, again it wasn’t just us, it was, the people got screwed over, the news media got screwed over, like, everybody got screwed over so we’re rapidly been like, happened there and how do we prevent it from happening again.

We’re also training our algorithms, like, if 2016 happened again, would we have, would the outcome be different?

Gennai also declares her opposition to Democrat presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren’s proposal to break up Google. Why? Because, says Gennai, if Google is broken up it can’t prevent another “Trump situation.”

Elizabeth Warren is saying we should break up Google. And like, I love her but she’s very misguided, like that will not make it better it will make it worse, because all these smaller companies who don’t have the same resources that we do will be charged with preventing the next Trump situation, it’s like a small company cannot do that.

Gennai also declared that no amount of soft pressure from Congress or the White House will make Google change its ways. In other words, talk won’t help — if politicians want to change Google’s behavior, they’ll have to go beyond committee hearings and actually change the law.

We got called in front of Congress multiple times, so we’ve not shown up because we know that they’re just going to attack us. We’re not going to change our, we’re not going to change our mind. There’s no use sitting there being attacked over something we know we’re not going to change. They can pressure us but we’re not changing. But we also have to be aware of what they’re doing and what they’re accusing us of.

According to her professional profile, Gennai works on “responsible innovation” in the Global Affairs division of Google — the same division run by Kent Walker, the Google VP who has declared his intention to make the populist-nationalist movement represented by Donald Trump a “blip” or “hiccup” in history, which he said “bends towards progress.”

Walker made these statements just days after the 2016 election, in a confidential video recording that was leaked to Breitbart News.

Like Guns, i think the rabbit is already out of the hat.

Restrictions with social media won't fly, yet i agree it is dangerously influential.
People are becoming walking zombies, and many are using it as a weapon, which is
    scary.

I really like Joe Rogan, and find myself agreeing with him on many issues.
I don't wanna step on toes here, but personally, his thoughts on Religion were mine exactly.
But many other topics as well.

Harmeet Dhillon Launches ‘Publius Lex’ Legal Fund to Fight Antifa and Big Tech

    9 Jul 2019

Attorney Harmeet Dhillon, known for her work defending Andy Ngo and James Damore, launched a new legal nonprofit, Publius Lex, aimed at protecting civil rights for all Americans, including conservatives who are the frequent target of far-left activists and corporations.
Dhillon is the attorney for Andy Ngo, the journalist who was hospitalized with a brain hemorrhage by extremist “Antifa” activists in Portland two weeks ago. Her firm is also waging a class-action lawsuit against Google on behalf of former employees who allege the company discriminates against non-progressives and against white and Asian males.

A judge recently ruled that the case against Google can proceed to discovery.

She also won a lawsuit in California against Yvette Felarca, a prominent Antifa activist who filed a frivolous lawsuit against the Berkeley College Republicans. Thanks to Dhillon’s lawsuit, a judge ordered Felarca to pay $11,000 to former College Republican president Troy Worden.

Dhillon’s new non-profit, Publius Lex, aims to gather financial contributions to protect the civil liberties of all Americans, in an era when they are increasingly under attack by radical activists and “woke” corporations like Google and Facebook.

On Twitter, Dhillon said that the first case taken up by Publius Lex will be Andy Ngo’s.

“Over the past few years I have noticed a distinct gap in the civil rights community, with many of the clients I wanted to represent not fitting within the parameters of the legacy civil rights establishment,” said Dhillon in a comment to Breitbart News.

“The ACLU no longer seems to care about the First Amendment or religious liberties; some of the religious nonprofits I’ve worked with have focused on trendy issues, and no one seems to speak for many Americans who feel their fundamental natural and civil rights being violated.”

“So I started Publius Lex to provide legal support for Americans whose civil rights are being violated and who are underserved in today’s America.”

    1. the facebook rules apply to all irrelevant people on the platform. They've obviously gotten to a point where they want to remove themselves of some of the toxicity from their site. Good for them.

    2. They claim they are against hate and violence because they are - most people are after all. As for tax payers subsidizing the site, that's a case that can be made against just about every business and person for that matter.

    3. I don't think so, I think all people will play by the same rules when posting. You could argue that some public figures will get less protection from mean words aimed at them, you're probably right. I don't care about that all that much.

They have now banned ANTIFA according to Tim Pool. He also addresses this whole thing

I think Facebook purposely makes things vague or confusing so that they can have plausible deniability when hoopla is created over their rules.

of course they do. Hard rules are easier to challenge. And glad they banned Antifa, that parade of losers needs to be given no credibility.
