Listen to countless boots from the first 3 or 4 tours. Dave is every bit as good as the album versions, as were the band. Just because a band plays things "note for note" doesnt mean they were "tighter". More polished, sure. But when a band can consistently go off on jams, or play songs differently than what is on the album, and it sounds great, that is a band that is tight and fully in command of the stage and their craft. They still retained some of that in 86 and 88, but pretty much from 91 up through 2015 on many songs I can pretty much predict what fills Ed and Al are going to do at certain points of songs. And Mike doing root 8ths most of the night is a far cry from the Mike who was blistering the bass frets on extended jams of YRGM, like the one in Tuscon in 79.

Van Halen didn’t really get sloppy live with Dave until 83-84. By then they were all in their own little worlds.

I have seen great bands be loose and others who are paint by numbers. Both can sound great. I do think that part of the reason why VH became tighter was more due to the music genre than anything else. I don't think Eddie went "shit we got Sammy in the band so lets start really honing in what we are doing on stage." It was an evolution of the genre. A band like Motley Crue who was loose, fast and dangerous their first two albums were playing by numbers by Dr Feelgood. Def Leppard was tighter than a 13 year old Vietnamese boy. It simply became more professional when the bands went up on stage.

That hypothetical likely has far less impact because in the 6 pack almost all his vocals were a live take. One of the charms especially of the first 5 is there are indeed mistakes and blemishes. The live and studio approaches of van hagar and van Halen were indeed different. They were more polished and precise in the studio w Sam. The bands were just different and the live and studio are both connected.
Those who are analog natives likely prefer the raw aspect while it sounds unprofessional to some digital natives. I always find musicians regardless of age attracted to the original and in part when you create enough you appreciate the greatest beauty is often in the mistakes.

I appreciate this post, Darrin. Personally, I like it when bands sound as polished live as they do on the record.

One sounds more in the moment and spontaneous. The other more rehearsed and safe.
