Default New Sammy & Mike song "Affirmation"

Pretty good, sounds like 80s Sammy with Mike guesting:

I'm not trying to bash Sam/Mike but these 3 songs that have been released have been pretty underwhelming IMO.

Affirmation is the best of the 3 which isn't saying much. To my ears it just seems like filler songs on what would be a normal Sammy solo album. I still listen to songs frequently off Marching to Mars, Red Voodo, 10/13 and Not 4 Sale but everything after that (solo wise) has seemed average to Sub Par.

Hmmm. It's a case of glass half full/half empty.
Sammy's solo record were getting worse in terms of songwriting. This new one is a little better. But it's not the best thing he's ever done. It's not as good as Chickenfoot, either. So you could see it as a little improvement, something solid if unspectacular, or just say it's not the great thing Sammy promise. I think Sammy at this point needs a songwriting partner, and he's lucky because he got one in Joe Satriani. So call Joe!

Great post, and thanks for linking to Sammy's new song.

Front men by nature of their species have to have glaring blind spots to have enough ego to get up and do what they do.

Similar Dave's inability live to recognize what he can do well and what he can not I feel Sam has a similar inability with his writing. When he writes more personally, life, and in a way smaller more direct personal feeling based the songs work. He does that well and connects with the material and it brings out his best. When he tries to do the sex thing, or bigger meaning universal stuff it just is not his wheelhouse as a writer. A concept album on the ills of money is just a bad idea. It is equivalent of Dave going oh yeah I can hit that high note. No man, just no. I love some of Sam's solo work better than his VH material but this entire record seems like a bad set up and him trying to do what he sucks at instead of nailing his wheelhouse. It is a shame because I think Mike sounds great and some of Vic's better sounding riffs. But the melodies and lyrics just kill it. Not what he does well. Sounds bad, does not come off authentic and just not what he does well. I hope he does something else, a shame to end doing what he does not do well.

Funny you mention Welcome to the Jungle. My first introduction to them was that video back when MTV ruled rock music. Hated them and that song initially with a passion. Actually, better stated the video made me bust out laughing. Guns and Bozos immediately came to mind. Took a while.

Your point is good as to bands/singers youíre not not familiar with but not sure I agree as ones you have some familiarity with. Def Leopard (High and Dry album) was immediately good for a band I never heard of. Certainly Van Halen 1 also comes to mind. There are others...

As Is compares to Me Wise Magic quality wise for me. It has a lot of energy to the song.

I can still remember the first time I heard part of Me Wise Magic. I was driving north on Telegraph Road through Santa Fe Springs, CA on my way to my office in Montebello and I was listening to Howard Stern on 97.1 KLSX. Howard had somehow gotten ahold of a copy of the song before it was officially released. I remember liking the intro. Then, when that chorus kicked in, it was HOT DAMN! I remember this band!! I friggin' love this band!!!

I was on Kelly AFB, a few months before I got out of the Air Force...I had just left a class and was on my way home when I caught the radio premier...a minute or so into the song, I was pulled over for speeding, on base. The officer asked me to turn the radio off, I refused...I out ranked him...I ended up with a rather meaningless speeding ticket....never turned the radio off or the volume down.

Edward just writes he could care less who the singer is while writing. The singer comes into play on the song selection and then what they do with it. It's why what would the other guy do w song x really does not reflect the process. The other guy likely would have selected a different piece of music because their approach is just so different. Edward does not create a Sam riff or a Dave riff, he just does riffs. They breakout as they do because Sam and Dave have such different approaches so naturally select very differently

I'd agree to a point, but Ed has said that he wrote differently for Sam, as Sam prefers the more blues style song approach of riff-vocal-riff-vocal. I know everyone is going to break that down to the nth degree, I mean dear God, we have a thread on Ed's workout regimen for Pete's sake.
