Genesis' Steve Hackett Talks Pioneering Guitar Tapping, Says He Started Doing It in '71

"I started tapping in 1971, two years before 'Dancing With the Moonlit Knight.' The inspiration was to be able to play very fast on one string. I then realized you could move it from string to string.

"I think at the time I was recording it I thought it was the kind of thing that Phil [Collins] would like; it was fast, but it was very rhythmic."

"I'm the inventor of tapping on record. We haven't found anyone who tapped earlier than me - unless somebody did it in the 1930s, but I doubt it.

"When you see old films of Genesis from 1971 on, you can see me using the technique. It's there on many recordings, as well."

"Eddie [Van Halen] and I have never spoken about it, but yes, he has credited me with tapping. Eddie is a fine player, of course, and he's the one who named the technique.

"I'm not protective of any techniques. I've learned from every guitarist that I've watched. Everybody plays slightly differently; everybody has been my guitar teacher. I guess I've shown a few moves to some people."

Well damn. I'm not a EVH fan anymore. I now move all of my respect to Steve Hackett. He is much more cooler than Ed. Plus, he discovered tapping before Eddie had his paper route.

Ed's guitars look much cooler than Steve's tho. So, there is that going in EVH's favor.

True. Ed took it to another level. That being said, Hackett probably knew exactly what he was hearing when he first heard "Eruption" (unlike a lot of people.)

Eddie never said he invented it. However, he did do something that very few did before him with the technique. He wrote good songs! You know, songs that people actually enjoy listening to? Isn't it amazing what happens when you write a good song?

Same thing in movies. Its amazing what people will sit through if you come up with a good story.

Eddie not only named his band Genesis but he copied tapping too?!

I love those early Genesis albums. They always say the band wasn’t the same after Peter Gabriel left but it’s actually Hackett leaving that altered their sound.

I like the Gabriel stuff. I like most weird art rock though.

I picked up The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in vinyl just this past weekend.

Selling England By The Pound is their best imo.

Hackett is still an excellent player and has an output rate excelled by few. 25 studio albums (solo only, not including Genesis) in 44 years. A new album, on average, every 20 months or so.

I've quite enjoyed some stuff from his most recent albums. Love Song To A Vampire is a goddamn guitar anthem, both electric & acoustic.

How would Steve know nobody did it before him, on a record? That would be near impossible.

How would Ed even know what Steve was doing on that song? Genesis wasn't on US TV back then.
I would think Ed didn't hear it or see it first. He just stumbled upon it on his own.

Chet Atkins was tapping way back in the day as well. Plenty of people did tapping before Ed, Ed just took it to a different level technically and as a songwriting tool.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Chet was also sweep picking as well as a few others fairly early.

As is often the case in all sorts of areas, people confuse "invent" with "popularize". Both are important.
