I'll be surprised if any team but Washington wins it this year.

The Nationals obviously have a great shot, but neither the Astros nor Yankees will be easy to beat in the World Series.

I think they have won 17 of their last 19. Worst thing for them right now is a week off.

The Cardinals are a hot and cold team. The fans here were pretty lukewarm to the team most of the year even though they were only a couple of games out of first place for much of the time--or even in first place. While they defended and pitched well, their offense was very streaky. When it was hot they looked unstoppable, but then they would look like shit for weeks at a time and fans would be irate. Definitely a frustrating team to watch.

In the end they hit a cold streak at the same time another team was hot. The fact that it happened in the span of a couple of days may have surprised fans outside of St. Louis, but here it was almost expected to happen. That, coupled with some untimely defensive miscues and great starting pitching from the Nats, led to their ultimate demise.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I didnít mean to disparage your team man, I just didnít see a team that looked very good against Washington at all.

Not that I should talk, the Dodgers didnít look their best against Washington either.

Iíll tell you step one in the Atlanta office, 1. Resign josh Donaldson 2. Get bullpen help. Pay more. Get better arms. Stop going to the goodwill of teams for bullpen arms.

    I sense some saltiness...lol

The whole "smartest fans in baseball" (or best fans in baseball) is something that I think other fans think is a self-appointed title, but it really isn't. It's something that people from other teams and cities have said about St. Louis and it became this thing where it gets repeated much to the derision of other fans, particularly rivals.

Over time, after people have heard it so much, there's no doubt that it's become kind of an inside joke among a large slice of Cardinal fans who make fun of the "Best Fans in Baseball" moniker by calling it BFIB (bee-fib) behavior. For example, when Molina grounds out to 2nd base with a runner on second with nobody out, there will be a big cheer. The jaded among the crowd will deride the BFIB behavior.

The reality is that while announcers continue to play it up, and admittedly there's a small subset of fans that hang their hat on this stuff as a badge of honor, most of us just roll our eyes to it.

Oh I get it man, no worries. They didn't look like they belonged there from our side as well

It was just more trying to explain how the hell they got there, because if that was your first time seeing them play you would have a hard time believing they won 91 games.

I just don't know that it's out there. It should be, but it seems like quality pitching, both to start and to also finish is rarer than a YouTube video of Brute playing a KISS song! So sick of guys leading off innings by walking the first batter - maybe it's just the games I watch. Don't know if the strike zone has changed, or if it's the umpires, or the mound needs to be raised or the inside of the plate has been taken away from the pitchers - or all of the above. I know people think 1-0 games are boring but I find games watching pitchers who don't have command to be boring-er

Apparently walks haven't changed much in the last 20 years, but I know what you mean. I think partly it's because guys are coming in and giving 100% effort which can make it difficult to locate pitches.

Bullpens are the toughest thing to construct on a consistent basis. You can have the same guys and year over year the performances will be completely different. Part of the problem is where these guys come from and they tend to fall into one of the following categories:

    1) failed (or aging) starting pitchers who are given a shot in the pen so they can max out. Maybe their stuff at 100% will get people out while 90% results in frozen ropes.
    2) young guys who are learning the ropes in the big leagues.
    3) bullpen "specialists" with two, maybe three effective pitches and will spend their career there.

The problem with all three of these categories is consistency. Conditioning your arm and psyche to transition from starter to bullpen isn't easy, and it's probably harder to do over the long term than short term. Young guys that are lights out from the bullpen will become starters to maximize their value to the team, so you can't count on them year after year. Bullpen specialists may lose the effectiveness of their one or two pitches from year to year, or even game to game, making their productivity unpredictable over the long term.

Taking my own team as an example, the Cardinals have sunk major dollars into arms in the bullpen, and while the bullpen performed well by the end of the year, the major contributors were guys that weren't supposed to be in there (other than Miller, who was maddeningly inconsistent at times).

I think the best way to produce a great bullpen is to have depth in pitching in the organization so you can move guys in and out depending on their performance. Not many organizations have the luxury of that. While the Cardinals have done a relatively poor job of bringing up top starting 8 players the last 5 or 6 years, they've been great at stockpiling arms.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

If you can’t score runs without the HR, it is a major problem against good teams in a series.

Yep, and having half of your teams outs being strike outs, only compounds the problem.
