I tried it for a couple years, between 1981 and 1983. It was really for my own benefit and it was just audio, not video (or film). I just wanted a audio document of concerts I was seeing and didn't trade anything. Sadly, my friend took most of my tapes when he moved up North at the beginning of the 90's although I still have a few left including almost the entire Heavy Metal Day of the '83 US Festival including VH's complete set.

I used an AIWA stereo cassette deck which at the time was a pretty versatile little unit. It came with a pair of these little sugar cube-size stereo mics that I would clip my shirt at each shoulder to approximate ear balance and separation, run the mic lines through the back of my collar under my shirt and to the recorder clipped on my belt for ease of access. It was pretty discrete but it was a bitch sneaking in. I would enclose everything in a zip lock baggy and shove it in my pants in the crotch and as soon as I got in to the venue, make a bee-line for the men's room and get the li'l fucker outta my pants and set it up. I'd carry an extra cassette and spare batteries in my pocket in case I needed either. Under ideal conditions, I could record a show without having to worry about my rig except to flip a tape. The problem was, due to the sensitivity of the mics, it would pick up any conversations and especially high pitched screaming.

I remember recording a Springsteen show in late 1981 and sweating bullets the first half of the show because I was in the 2nd row right in front of Bruce (who was a hard core anti-bootlegger). He kept playing right in front of us and I was thinking even though my rig was pretty well concealed, he could see what I was doing, so during the mid-show intermission, I took all my gear and pocketed it so I could enjoy the rest of the show without the paranoia. The last show I recorded was most of the '83 US Festival and I think the wear and tear through that brutal weekend was what resulted in the player crapping out soon afterwords.

I got to know some hardcore bootleggers in the mid-80's. This one guy would somehow smuggle a huge VHS video camera into venues and sell his tapes at record shows until he got busted and lost his camera at a Prince show in '85 which probably cost him $1,500+.

This is basically the player although the photo shows only one mic:

I've never heard a show from any of the first four tours where Dave sounded bad.

Man, all this stuff that's come out from the second tour the last few months has been awesome. The almost flawless soundboard recordings of Tuscon, San Diego, and Japan and now this. Amazing. Shows how untouchable the original band was live. Hopefully more stuff from 80 and 81 will surface someday.

The only bad part of all this YT stuff is Ed can use it as an excuse to not release anything officially.
We're happy it's there but we'd be in heaven if we could actually have a DVD or CD.

The people who say Roth never sounded great live have absolutely no knowledge of how the band sounded back then.

This is the perfect example of how the internet is an "echo chamber"... things get said a few times, (sometimes only ONCE if it's by a popular person) and whether it's true or not, people come to believe it, as things or ideas are reinforced through repetition.

We will always hear "Roth was never a great singer", but a million concert goers thought he was an AMAZING singer and frontman. How good was he? Well, a LOT of people thought he was easily THE BEST in the business.

I see that Eddie Trunk retweeted VHND's tweet about this footage, and said "Wow, this is insane!" So let's see if he talks about it on his show sometime soon.

Screw him. He said that Roth was never a good live singer.....now or back then.

So that's all of it! Bummer no BG or OLA though, but God bless them for releasing this! At least BG is on the Boston bootleg, although you can't really see it.

Not including '07-on, that leaves "Outta Love Again" and "And the Cradle Will Rock..." as the only songs they played live back then during the original era not on bootleg video. Yeah LOC and TYWH are only a few seconds long, but they exist.

That was a good bunch of videos. Dave certainly it knows how to work a crowd.

And for those who say he was never good live, these are proof.

The energy.. musicianship and attitude coming off that stage is incredible! No band could touch that! Just a shame you canít really see Alís thunderous drumming! You damn sure hear it though!

On the second part, right around 23:22, any idea what Dave says to Ed? "Give me some of that....?" And what riff is it that Eddie goes into? Sounds super familiar.

Couldnít agree more with you Jeff. He had the perfect voice for that music. And thereís a reason 90% of the frontmen that followed in the 80ís tried to emulate him.
