DD is a fun record. Total party vibe, great sounds, great chorus' to sing with, but it just doesn't compare to the others.
It was a rush job with them unable to take ideas further. Had they been able to work out more originals maybe then you get something comparable. Even though, I still doubt it.

WACF is a take no prisoners, run for your life assault of the senses. Possibly, VH at their best.
    DD isn't on that level.

Always have to start with the fact that the classic 6 pack are my 6 favorites albums ever, only a hair difference between them all.

DD had 3 cover songs. I don't count Happy Trails and BBWISWN as "covers". Too short and too fun not too like them anyways. Still, 3 is too many, this far into a bands career...except I love them so much! Also, I didn't latch onto to VH until 1984 so it's not like I was waiting a year or two for their next album after FW, I can see if you were already a fan and got DITS and PW. I'll bet my next paycheck no more than 10% of VH fans knew WHATGTG was a cover when they first heard it(if that)! DD goes down like a crisp, ice cold beer on a hot summer day.

WACF, is almost as dark as FW for me for some reason, cant put my finger on it but it just has a "vibe" to it regardless of some of songs like IASR and CTBM. The first 2 albums were like "Hey!, lets party and have some fun!" WACF and FW were more like "Hey!, lets get fucked up and do some damage!"

This album was not sequenced very well IMO, but I cant really figure out a better layout. This and VH II were albums I always jumped around tracks instead of listening straight through. TYWH is probably the most pedestrian song on the classic 6 pack. No super stand out solo's from Ed on here either. Of course great and amazing playing all around, but more of the riff/song is king on this one. Again, love it all, just pointing out a few things out.

    WACF in a landslide.

Love the originals on DD but they're just not enough to over come the sheer awesomeness of WACF. VH was totally on their A game for WACF.

Diver Down is my least favorite from the 6 pack and Women And Children First alternates between 4th and 5th place with 1984. That being said, I think WACF is a far superior album. It was VH's first record of all original material and it contains 3 of my all-time top 10 VH songs in Everybody Wants Some!!, Romeo Delight and In A Simple Rhyme. The 4 originals on Diver Down are stellar, but the abundance of covers makes it no match for WACF.

    That was my $.02.
    Agreed. Women & Children.

Been really enjoying WACF but I will always prefer the party 'hair metal' side of VH: Panama, HTF, Jump, ITO over the darker stuff. Mean Streets is a cool song but it's just too menacing to be a VH song.

I like the party side of VH too, yet love Mean Street et.al.
To me, with all due respect, that could only be a Van Halen track!

I knew W&CF would win but I donít think it would be a blowout and it isnít really.

Diver Down is just way too much fun of an album for me.

    Itís a crowd pleaser.

W&CF is more of an underrated cult classic.

I know this will be an unpopular opinion but Women And Children First is my least favourite Roth-era album.

It must be a Canadian thing.

The only song I really love on that album is Romeo. Don't really like the two songs people know the album by (Cradle and EWS). I much prefer the originals on DD.

I don't love Cradle, but EWS!! is flat out ( . Y . )!! So are Romeo and In A Simple Rhyme. Top Tier VH.

I dunno, I think the Canadian and the Chicagoan may have a point. After all these years, Iíve been recently reconsidering WACF and its pound for pound longevity.

Diver, for all its issues, clearly has a warmer brown sound tone than WACF. In a lot of ways, DD may technically be more like Warning than WACF. In essence and engineering, WACF is a lot more kin to VH 2 than Warning. Raw, unpolished, a bit demo-patchwork in spots, and sure, some like their VH that way. I like my VH a bit more refined, yet warm dark and fuzzy at the same time, which is why maybe VH1, Warning, DD, and OU812 are possibly the best VH albums for me in terms of tone.

Diverís 4 originals are near perfect VH tracks. The covers, less so obviously.

WACF...has some odd birds. LOC has never resonated to me. Chorus is awful. Romeo is easily the most overrated VH deep cut in the entire catalogue. Everybody loves it. Including me to a point. But Ed has better speedy riffs. OF blows doors on Romeo. Cradle is a perfunctory radio single. CTBM is a one off like BBB. EWS is meh.

That said, WACF has Fools and Whiskey, which are unassailable, and its biggest flashpoint owning the greatest VH song of all time - IASR/Growth.

But it really does have more a VH2 raw type of sonic power. And again, I guess I like the warmest brown sound Ed has to offer...and pre-electric boogie (1984 and virtually all the Sam era), that whittles down to VH1, FW, and DD.

OU812 has flavors of that tone...if only theyíd bothered to turn up the bass.

And thatís another reason why Me Wise Magic was such a surprise. It was technically Edís first real return to that warm brown tone since The Full Bug.

WACF is a powerhouse album on par with VH, VHII and FW. Diver Down was solid with the four original songs but no where close to the level of the first four albums which are pretty much untouchable in terms of rock greatness.
