    VH2

It doesn't necessarily have the best songs out of the six but man, it's the perfect album. Out of all the VH albums, this is the one where I almost never skip around - press play and let it run....

(Coulda, I like really these polls that are based on "favorite" and not the "best".)

Fair Warning was the first record mostly of material not from the club days. That energy and pent up frustration or creative tension shows. It unreleased such a strong record. My favorite by far. The debut like so many debut albums has so much incredible material. You have so long to write and sharpen on first records with club days and that record was just a scream in your face out of nowhere. Instantly the guitar was redefined.

I do wish ALL VH records had the tone and production of Diver Down. Not my favorite album but that tone and production is peak although 1984 was so well polished as well but the tone on DD is better in my view. Just warmer and kind of a cross roads of the raw and warmth tone and the more polished but colder tone later on.

Totally agree, though DD actually IS one of my faves. Iíve never really been able to put my finger on why 1984 hasnít ever really grabbed me. It should, after all, but there is something of a Ďcolder toneí and maybe thatís it. Now if Drop Dead Legs had the tone and feel of Little Guitars, for example, as great as it is, DDL would be a true VH monster. ĎCourse, it doesnít help that Mikeís bass has been turned right down, a production flaw from 1984 through to OU812.

Anyway, my top two havenít changed in almost thirty years: WACF and FW. I canít pick between I, II and DD for third place. 1984 is #6 for the reasons given above - itís easily my least played album from the six pack.
Use my hand, I won't look!

Fair Warning, for me, has always been the "everything you wanted to know about Van Halen" record. Sonically and musically it's all over the place. And yet it's pure Van Halen.

But I gotta admit that for the last few months when I put on VH, I put on 1984. I skip Jump and I'll Wait a lot, but the rest is pure gold. I love the jam quality and the openness of Ed's playing. And though some find it too polished, I love the production and tone on it. Modern, yes. But still raw and warm to my ears.

VH with Dave is definitely a less is more product in regards to recording. The pieces fit so well naturally w no real overlap just turn on the machines and step back gets best results. Overthink it, polish it etc.... kind of loses something. Those first 4 were done in weeks. Even what may be DLR's most consistent work solo the DLR Band was done beginning to end in 10 days. This group less is more, do not think too much production wise. A lot of beauty in their imperfections.

Fair Warning is my favourite and probably will be forever! Love the album, the songs, the lyrics, the front cover, the back one, the inner sleeve, the pictures, the production.

Then it has to be Van Halen II. The drums are amazing there - that's AVH's record for sure!

After that, the other 04 classic albums are tied and I do listen to them depending on my mood.

Ha, I always assumed that most people here considered them synonymous after I tried deciphering the difference in the past so have just been doing "favorite" for years now.

Honestly with the first four albums it could be any one of them depending on my mood. But sentimentally I have a soft spot in my heart for 1984 because that brought me into the Van Halen world.

    1a) Fair Warning
    1b) Van Halen
    1c) Women and Children First
    1d) Van Halen II
    5) 1984
    6) Diver Down
