I think they actually over mic'd his kit, which I think caused the toms to be such a garbled, distorted mess on tracks like Poundcake and JD. Definitely think the toms sound better on OU812. And the drum sound on the BOV1 1996 tracks destroy the FUCK drum sound.
All right, man! I agree with you there - once they knew what Alex VH wanted as a rich, yet different drum sound back in the day, they could record his drums with all they learned. Even Balance has a pretty cool sound, IMHO. Just like you said, both MWM and CGTSNM sound clear and great to my ears as well.

Oh, and OUskate12 in terms of drums still sounds dated to me, sorry.

“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

Yep those 1996 tracks just sound spectacular but the most dated drum sound for me is easily the Simmons pads on 5150.

First post. 5150 is my favorite. I think Balance is probably second, followed by OU812, and then For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.
