It was part of the conversation and it was Joe Rogan who described it as such. So in a David Lee Roth thread about a David Lee Roth interview, are we supposed to ignore all discussion of Sammy if it is brought up in that interview? Why? Because you're too sensitive and get your panties in a bunch?

I liked going to the mall when I was a teenager. Good place to try to meet chicks back in the day.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I take the description “mall rock” as more accessible, more commercial.

And VH Mach 2 was just that. For good (more fans) to not so good (those who preferred when VH was dangerous).

It’s not a knock on VH is you prefer the more accessible, commercial version. If that’s what you like, just own it.

Default Dave on Joe Rogan LIVE, NOW (3 p.m. EST 02/28/2019)

I donít even understand what the term ďmall rockĒ is. Does it imply that only teenage girls who liked Cyndi Lauper listened to Van Halen after 1984? Is he saying that cool people like him donít go to a mall? Is he talking about the music they used to play at the mall? Seriously I donít get it.

And does it really matter that Joe Rogan doesnít like Sam era VH? Who cares what he thinks. It was just part of the conversation. Has no bearing on anything.

Who doesn’t own the fact that they prefer Sammy?

I’ve never heard the term “mall rock” until this interview.

If what he meant was a more accessible VH, then they were mall rock starting with Diver Down.

Default Dave on Joe Rogan LIVE, NOW (3 p.m. EST 02/28/2019)

Van Halen has always been a commercial band, I donít even know what the fuck Joe Rogan is talking about if thatís what he meant. They had plenty of radio-friendly music with Dave, even from the beginning. They were hardly like early Metallica or something. Van Halenís early albums sold well because they did have commercial appeal. I mean...duh.

The first time I heard Van Halen I was seven years old on a summer camp bus in 1978 and it was on the radio. So whatever. Theyíve always been an accessible band. To someone like Joe Rogan it would probably be totally uncool to say I heard Sam era Van Halen in 1988 when I was seven years old.

I looked it up. Here's the Urban Dictionary description.

    https://www.urbandictionary.com/defi...rm=Mall%20Rock

    Here's the copy & paste.

Actually makes it even more confusing.

I assume it's a mild putdown & have no problem with it.

    Mall Rock

A sleek subgenre of pop rock prevalent between 1996 and 2001 which incorporates elements of '90s alternative rock as well as a distinctive corporate lyrical influence. Major mall rock acts include Smash Mouth, Barenaked Ladies, Fastball, Third Eye Blind, and "Green Album"-era Weezer. Some of the work of acts from the same era (Ben Folds Five, Cake, Eels) falls under the mall rock genre banner as well. The genre was greatly influenced by the soft and yacht rock scenes of the 1970s, intellectual '80s new wave, and '90s U2.

The scene rose after the decline of grunge in the mid-'90s. Many recording companies wanted to distance themselves with the self-destructive nature of the underground rock scene and favored more corporate-sounding groups. As a means to gain an even larger demographic of listeners, slicker production methods were used - such as the increased inclusion of synthesizers. Much of the music that rose to prominence during this time featured heavy consumeristic themes, and, while some acts used said themes ironically, most others rather promoted them. The music was meant to sound optimistic and hopeful, making it very successful for a good five-year period. Major hits of the era include "All Star" by Smash Mouth, "Islands in the Sun" by Weezer, "You Get What You Give" by New Radicals, "One Week" by Barenaked Ladies, "The Way" by Fastball, and "The Distance" by Cake. The style evaporated after 9/11. No major revivals of the sound have occurred since then.
"Weezer used to be a really good band... that is, until they went total mall rock!"

Certain fans like to think early VH was a metal band and that because they don’t like ballads that they somehow are more masculine for it. They completely ignore the fact that there was always pop songs.

I don’t get it but you see it on any VH thread on Facebook.

So it describes music at a time that totally has nothing to do with Van Halen? OK check. Haha.

Look Van Halen was a more aggressive band early on. They were. But their songs always had a pop sensibility which is why they were popular with the mainstream and why they sold so many albums.

By the time Sam got into the band, everyone sounded like Van Halen so the music world just changed.

The idea of playing aggressive music that could have a pop sensibility really was something Van Halen did better than anyone. But most ďheavyĒ bands saw that success and jumped on board.

There is no scenario for some people that Van Halen could have taken that would have been OK with them after Dave left. Thatís just the way it is.
