Default Is Van Halen the most influential band on 80's hair metal?

    Your opinion on this?

As a frontman, was DLR the biggest influence on hair metal frontmen?
And were the guitarists of hair bands trying to copy EVH?

What is understood doesn't need to be discussed.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Absolutely. VH Halen also often gets lumped in with the Hair Bands and shouldn't.. but they were a huge influence on most of them. The only other really significant influence would be Led Zeppelin.

They all tried to replicate Van Halen, but completely missed the point. Van Halen weren't interested in replicating anyone else. They were simply just being themselves. Eddie has said many times, "I only know how to be me."

All the hair bands forget one tiny detail that Van Halen were really based on...

In other news, the ocean is wet.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

If not, who was? Not even a reasonable debate.

I have noticed its really rare for VH to be called an 80s hair band. They broke in the 70s and blew the 70s groups away. While they became what every 80s hair band tried to emulate, they werent really a hair band to me, (anymore than Aerosmith...)

    Na.
Everyone knows Paul Reynolds of Flock of Seagulls was the main influence on guitar players.
His soulful rhythms and intricate solos were a big inspiration on 80's hair metal players.

As far as the front man aspect. Limahl from Kajagoogoo is who those hair metal singers were copying.
His stage moves were a big influence.
Same thing with the fashion. His frosted tips were inspiring everyone from Nikki Sixx to George Lynch.

Sure, Dave and Eddie played a part. But the bulk of it was coming from these guys.

VH set the template for the 80s but no band that followed ever came close to the originality, musicianship and good times of VH.

    They were a party band.
    Eddie Van Halen in 2012:

"ESQ: What are you going to do with all the material that you wrote with Sammy Hagar?

EVH: Oh, I hadn't thought about that. That's some great music. They're just on vacation, maybe. They're off to college and they're going their own way. Who knows?"

    Forget "80's" ...."Hair Metal".....

    Classic VH is timeless.

The first 6 Van Halen albums and tours rank up with the all-time greats. Stones, James Brown, Sly, Robert Johnson, Ray, Mozart, Miles..ect.

Classic Van Halen stands with the greats.

I'd put VH as the most influential Rock band of the late 70's that paved a 10 lane super-highway well into the mid-80's...

"Hair bands" are just a bunch of fucking posers in make-up...
Woke up this mornin, got Blue Moon in your eyes...
