Default Which would you rather listen to?

Curious, as I would rather hear the Australia show.

    Australia ‘98.

A better setlist IMO as it includes both eras and it has better vocals as Gary/Mike > Dave/Wolf in that department.

Plus Eddie in 1998 has a way better tone than 2013.

I made two resolutions this year. One was that I wouldn't talk shit about Gary's time in Van Halen. The other was that I wouldn't talk shit about Kiss.

I'm doing good so far, but it gets difficult the more I log on here.

Tokyo Dome. Yes, Dave struggles, but not nearly as much as some make it out to be, and I enjoy his Japanese banter because it gets the crowd going and laughing even if I dont understand it.

And, the setlist isnt watered down with the likes of WCTBL or Right Now.

That said, I really enjoyed the tour with Gary, and for the most part it did have a great setlist. But, like with Sam, the band always left out my favorite stuff from that era. Which is understandable, since crap like WCTBL was popular. I'd still rather have heard Gary sing "5150" or Summer Nights or AFU from that era.

    Amen!!!

Notice there's no slagging Roth or 'Sam vs Dave' bs... Hmmmm. I like all III eras of Van Halen with their lead singers, and the setlist from Sydney '98 represents that.

Can't wait for the first obtuse reply like "What about Van Wolf etc?" The Sammy or Gary eras weren't played..., Duh!

And yes, Eddie's tone was more pleasing to me, as well as the lead/background vocals gelling more. IMO.

    Not curious at all, IMO.
I'd go so far as to say 'completely understandable'.

I'd give a slight nod to Tokyo Dome. Dave doesn't sound as bad as people make it out to be, yeah he has some cringe inducing notes but he's decent for most of it.

The main reason as always is I like the material better. Now, if the Gary show had 5150 and Summer Nights and Runaround and BOBW it might be a different story. I like Ed's tone better in 98 too.

I actually like them both and an I'd listen to either one without too much difficulty.

I like them both. Not dissing Tokyo, just heard it a bunch of times. III era reminds me of being 25 and young and adopting my 1st & 2nd dogs (Courtney, Cosmo) and buying Peavey Wolfgangs and 5150 amps and shit. Planning a wedding (divorced over 10 years now, lol) I was always a big Extreme fan so VH3 was a cool band to me.

I was on board for Van Halen 3.

But I knew it was over after seeing them at Alpine Valley and the place was completely empty.

Great tour, album was ok but it needed to be a grand slam.

Most people don’t even remember this lineup existed.

Oh yeah I really enjoyed that tour with Gary. I have that partial Australia show on VHS and CD. I wish it had Romeo Delight, as they really blazed on that one on that tour.

It seems so strange to see Al playing with the neck brace, but he did it for what, two or three tours? I remember an interview with Ed, I think during the III tour, where he said he was amazed Al could go out there every night. He said something like by the end of the show, Al would be in a cold sweat and I think he couldn't feel the tips of his fingers or something.
