Did he play "Toad" or a decent amount of it (on that tour's solo)? Or was it just something similar or a few seconds/quote from it?

Al said the first section of his solo on that tour was his personal "homage" to Toad. A couple posts back I put up a YT vid of his solo in Chicago. No video, just pictures, but the audio is very good and clear. You'll hear bits of Toad and the "influence" of Toad in the first minute or two of his solo. He pretty much played it like that every night of the tour.

Personally, my favorite part of his solo on that tour was probably the second section, with the flanger effect put on the drums.

LOL. I don't think he ruins anything completely either. He's not singing like '07, so, I can see where people think he is.
But it's like you said, a line here, a bad strain or a bad word there....it's not taking away that much. And the band is just so good.

Yeah, Panama, some stuff in ATBL. Just things here and there. It's not every word out of his mouth.

There can't be show without Alex doing his thing. No way!
His drums have a "brown sound" all to themselves.

Love the flanger stuff. Too cool. He's dun some really great things over the years. I appreciate the fact he kept it fresh. Showed what he was influenced by at the time, or was paying respect to. I wish some of those Sam tours Ed woulda took a page from him.

I don't see how you could like rock n roll and not like that.

I think yelling "Alex Van Halen" after that helped me go horse the next day. Some good air drummin' as well.

I took my sister that tour. She'd been to a zillion club shows but never an arena show.
Everything was amplified to her. Including the solos.
An arena going nuts to the man, the myth, the legend that is Alex Van Halen....she was in awe how he killed it. And all of us!

It always amazes me the amount of people on here who say they would rather ditch the solos, even Ed's. Part of the greatness of VH has always been the superb musicianship of the Brothers. I also think people forget that the band uses the solos as a chance for the other members to catch a breather. As they get older, no way are they going to ditch a chance to take a break.

I don't get it either, JD. One of the things that set them apart, back then, was how skilled they were.
You always want to hear the greats play solos. That's just standard procedure.

Nobody has ever said ditch Edís solos lol. People have said ditching bass and drum solos in lieu of two extra vh tracks might be better mostly because the majority of concert attendees donít care about those segments anymore for any band not just VH.

Nowadays, the crowds being a little different, I can understand it, somewhat.

I consider Alex world class like Ed. It's like a Rush concert without a Peart solo.

There have been some who have said they've grown tired of Ed's "stale" solo and don't think it's necessary anymore. I remember CaboChris being one who said he didn't need to see another Ed solo because nothing in his eyes would match LWAN.

Yes, drum solos have always been a favorite of mine. Especially since I'm such a big fan of jazz legends. But the best rock drummers are those that can incorporate jazz elements into their solos. Alex is one. Part of the downfall of rock music has been the abandonment of actual virtuosic playing of instruments. The Van Halen Brothers , sadly, seem to be among the last of rock performers that like to showcase their skills in a highlighted solo situation.

Maybe someday solos, and the skill sets needed to make them worthwhile, will make a comeback and bring rock music back to the forefront but it doesn't seem very likely.

Another thing I find funny, and really is a bit hyperbolic, is the so called "mass exodus" to the bathrooms during solos and deep cuts. Lol, some always like to make it out to be "half the crowd" heading out during these parts of a show.

In all my years of VH concerts, I have yet to ever witness one of these swarming waves of fans heading to the beer lines and piss lines all at once. I would say maybe it's just a Pacific Northwest thing, but I've never witnessed it at any of the Staples Center shows I've been to with my cousin either. I'll chalk it up to hyperbole I think.

I do not consider Alex anywhere near the Professorís class nor would he himself. To be fair, nobody is in Peartís class save for Rich. Maybe Copeland, Baker and Bonzo.

Rush is literally the only band who had any real business doing a drum solo past 1993 lol. Drum solos are so 80s. That said, Copeland did a solo during the Police reunion tour in 07/08 and it was great. I myself still enjoy Alexís solos, but Iím a diehard VH fan. The only time I ever take time for a bathroom break at a VH show is if they play PW.
