I have always respected Nuno, but this song highlights his creative side. Gary sounds so much better here than on III...

I agree. '07 shoulda been the live record.
Some of the tunes on TD aren't that bad though.

I went back an listened to that '98 show. Been awhile. It sounds better than I remember.
I like, Gary. I like some tunes on III. He did good on the tour, but I've never been a huge fan of his.
I just don't think he fit.

I'll take the Dome by a shade.

Yeah, a 2007-2008 live album would've been better, if only because Al was still doing a real drum solo on that tour, with 3-4 distinctly arranged sections.

His chops are still there, and I like what he's played the last two tours, but his solos feel abbreviated and incomplete to me, and sometimes the backing track is too up front in the mix and detracts from what he's playing. I liked it better when he only used the backing track as the climactic last section of his solo. I know, I'm The only one on the board who likes drum solos and cares about what Al plays.

I've always loved his solos! I don't see how anyone couldn't. He's dun some classics over the years.
My only complaint is what you mentioned. The backing track is too much.

Yeah, and most of the ones he "ruins"(He doesn't really ruin any of em for me), it's not really the Whole song but a couple lines. Panama, for example, isn't bad all the way through. But, that line he does exaggerate badly(burnin' down the avenueoww!) sticks out in people's minds. Aww well, people hate the live album, I still like it although I haven't listened to it in months.

I really liked his 07-08 solo, opening with his homage to Ginger Baker's Toad, then going back to the flanger effect sound he did in his solos in 1980 and 1981, then finishing with the Latin tinged backing track playing parts of Outta Love Again. Good stuff.

I don't ever want to see a Van Halen concert without an Alex Van Halen drum solo.

Here, PoP, really good audio of Al's solo in Chicago in 2007.

I'd have to vote for Sydney '98 because I was there.
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth
